Kenwood TS-450S no audio out
 

The TS-450S on our yacht ADAGIO has been idle since our last ocean passages in 2012.

Preparing for a passage to New Caledonia end of this week I found that the Kenwood seems to work fine in all respects, BUT we have no audio out either the builtin speaker or the headphone jack. My guess is the cause is likely to be a control accidentally bumped while cleaning, varnishing. Darned if I can find it.

We are using primarily for Pactor 3 digital modes via Sailmail. Jim Corenman's Airmail software controls the TS-450S, setting frequencies to match the receiving Sailmail station. All that works, and Airmail is happy to try to connect. But I aborted connection attempt immediately as I can't tell if I am stepping on other communication.

I don't find the user manual at all helpful to answer my basic question: what are the necessary conditions for audio?

Any suggestions mucho appreciated!

Look at page 34 = 36

If you are a ham, you should already know how to operate your radio.

If you don't know how to operate it, you need to find an Elmer or get a different radio, one that is not as complicated.

All amateur digital modes are done using upper side band only.

I have the TS-690S, which is a TS-450S with Six Meters. A couple of
years ago I had a similar audio problem after the radio had been sitting
for a while.

It turned out that an electrolytic capacitor between the audio output
stage and the speaker (as best I can remember) had leaked its
electrolyte, which had eaten one of its printed circuit paths.

The repair consisted of replacing the defective capacitor and wiring a
jumper between the end points of the open circuit path. (I used a piece
of wire-wrap wire.)

Hey Fred, thanks heaps for your experience. I'm on the case. I'm hearing leaking electrolytics are not uncommon on this radio

DRM images certainly isn't. Certainly on the easterly side of the
Atlantic, on 08 and 40m (and, I suspect,160m), it's on LSB
