alinco radio problems

I just went to my first hamfest and I am disappointed. I bought a
Alinco dr590 that the guy said worked great. WHen I got it home,
everything in the display lights up, but only sqigially lines where the
numbers go. Pressing all the buttons does nothing. I can not even hear
static. I can power it off and on however.

What could this be and is it repairable? The radio is about 10 years
old. Can I repair this myself? WHat should I do from here?

Have you tried lowering the squelch to see if you can "hear static?" Also,
the lines in question may simply be the display. ADI and Alinco radios
often have this problem. It could be the display is too cold and as a
result a bunch of gibberish is displayed. Also, this may occur when there
is a loose connection in the display unit.

I have an ADI AR-247 that does this EVERY time I turn the unit on. A couple
quick flicks with the finger on the display and it seems to straighten up.

Just some thoughts.

Caveat emptor maximus. Many people have learned similar lessons, (self
included on some gelcell batteries). Bringing a multimeter and some
basic test gear with you might make sense.

Check the voltage on the batteries. Many displays get squirrelly when
the voltage is low.

Happy trails,

Well, I went back after posting my previous mail and everything
worked. I even caught a guy on simplex 25 miles away testing it on the
floor of my truck. I dont know what happened.

Does anyone know where I could get a manual for it? I could not find it
on the alinco website.

Also, are these radios any good? Can they be programmed with an offset
for repeater work? (The guy told me it would work on repeaters).
Thanks again for your help!

What batteries? you mean the 12 volt in the truck powering the radio
itself?

Look here. There is a service manual and down the page is the operating
manual.

You can use the battery to power it in the house if you want to. The rig
may act funny if the battery starts to get low on voltage.

*SIGH*

*Additional sigh*

Thirty seconds and a search on Google would have found you several
sites from which you can either download a PDF, or order a paper copy
(possibly even an original).
