Bit is a contraction of BInary digiT, or Binary digIT.

didn't know that .....


And then taking a big BITE of them, 8 bits at a time, except
that it is spelt BYTE to reduce confusion.

Although in the olden days (1965 onwards) in the PDP5 and PDP8
a byte was only 6 bits.
