Alinco DR 590 modifications?????
As many of you know I am fairly new to ham and got a radio to use as a
base station this weekend. It is an ALinco dr 590. The guy told me it had been modified to receive and transmit on extended frequercncies even cellular. I do not intend or want to transmitt illegally but it would be nice to recieve the local police and aircraft if possible. When I plugged it up I could get the frequency of my local police at 452 mhz but did not have an antenna to see if I could hear anything or not. The vhf goes from 130-174 I think. The uhf displays to 500 mhz. How can I tell if this radio has been modified easily? Also I thought cellular was 800 - 900 mhz. I could not get it to display that. As a last note does anyone know how I can find online a free manual for htis book? I have looked but only been able to find the service manual. Thanks again! |
Mods for that radio should be found at, http://www.mods.dk/view.php?ModelId=182 Since your radio already tunes out of the ham bands, I suspect the mod for frequency extension has already been done. Both operation and service manuals are available at the same site, at: http://www.mods.dk/view.php?ListManuals=alinco Ed K7AAT |
But I thought I would be able to get the aircraft bands and it does not
go that low. Plus one thing I read said the mods allowed you to tx but not rx those frequencies. I am confused! |

Your Alinco radio is FM only. Aircraft only transmit AM, so even if your radio could be made to tune down to the aircraft frequencies, it still could not hear (detect) aircraft radio traffic. You apparently mis-read the "mods" information. No mod I ever heard of would allow you to "TX" and NOT Receive. That wouldn't even make sense. Probably you meant, receive only, without transmitting, which would be just fine as you don't want to transmit out of the ham band, anyway. Ed K7AAT |
My old Alinco HT used to tune down to the aircraft
bands and Rx the AM just fine. I bought it in the US. Murray vk4aok wrote: But I thought I would be able to get the aircraft bands and it does not go that low. Plus one thing I read said the mods allowed you to tx but not rx those frequencies. I am confused! |
