Default Mobile HF questions

I am considering purchasing a Yaseu FT-857 with the associated FC-40 antenna
tuner and YA-007 8-ft whip for HF mobile use.

What is your experience with:
-- the FT-857
-- the FC-40 and YA-007 combination
-- other mobile antennas

Thanks.

Not to toot my own horn too much but my FT-857
group is fast approaching 2,000 members, many of
which use the equipment you listed everyday.

Come join us!

Hello Joe and welcome to mobileing (hard word). I have over 20 years of
county hunting behind me and I have DXCC, WAC and WAS many, many, times
over while mobile. I've paid my dues like most all county hunters have
and I'll tell you most CH'rs run Icom and Kenwood so perhaps you should
start there. The Screwdriver antennas and the BugCatchers are the only
antennas that I would ever put on my car/van/etc. I do recommend
top-hats for both of these types and I am a firm believer that the
biggest models are the best, my ears and S-meter know this to be true
and the shootouts prove it. If I were in your position (more money than
you can spend)I would put the Predater on my vehicle right off the
batt! You only have to decide if you will be fanatical like us or if you
just want to enjoy the experience of HF mobile (I love that too), you
will also have to take your wife's suggestions seriously ) One of you
could die from this adventure :^O If not married you have it made and
got the bull by the horns.
Do a search on screwdriver antennas and bug-catcher antenna.
Good heavens you are in for a blast!
