Yaesu FT-857D question

I just completed the installation of an FT-857 in my truck. My previous 857
and truck were lost in Hurricane Katrina.

This installation went along just fine but something is not happening.

I set up the antenna menu for the rig to use the ATAS-120 on HF and 6; I
use two antennas -- the ATAS-120 on HF and 6, and a dual-bander on UHF-VHF.
I went through all the setup steps according to the manual.

As I recall, when I changed bands, or when I moved more than approx 10khz on
HF, when I hit the PTT button, the display said WAIT until the ATAS-120
tuned itself then the rig transmitted. It's not doing that -- I can copy
signals and the ATAS-120 seems to be tuning, but, when I try to transmit,
the display says SWR and I don't see any power output -- and, I don't see
the WAIT indicating it's telling me that it's tuning the antenna.

Can someone help me out here?

Thanks.

By way of clarification: If I select menu option K (I think it's K) and hit
the A (TUNE) button, the antenna will tune -- the display shows WAIT and the
meter indicates high SWR which eventually is tuned out, then the display
goes back to the frequency I was on. Thus, I can tune the ATAS-120 by
leaving the righ on option K and hitting the A (TUNE) button when I change
bands of move freqs.

As I recall, the radio I lost in Katrina did this automatically.

Thanks.
