CR2016 battery w solder tabs - where to buy

I need to replace the CR2016 in my Yeasu FT-5200. Seems ridiculous to
pay $10+ to Yeasu for a $2.00 battery. Has anyone had any luck finding a
source that you can share with me for a low cost alternative?

Thanks and 73,
Frank K9IC

Tin the tips of two wires -- Smash them flat with a ball-peen hammer --
Trime the tinned leads to a wee bit less than the diameter of the
battery -- Assemble the wires and the battery by slipping some heat
shrink tubing over the whole mess -- Shrink to taste.

If you have some pices of Very Thin brass, cut two brass pieces to
a somewhat smaller diameter than the battery -- Solder each wire to
one pice of brass -- Assemble the brass pieces and the battery by
slipping some heat shrink tubing over the whole mess -- Shrink to taste.

Use hot melt glue to tack the battery in place inside the radio.

I replaced the soldered-in battery in the TS-60 by buying a battery
holder at radio shack, soldered that in, and then slipped in a $1.50
CR20xx battery.

hi frank,

http://www.mouser.com and digikey has them.

for those with the ts-50, either the battery holder replacement with
slip in cell works fine.

The solder the wire on the cell can work but why take the chance
of heating the insides up and possible leaks later destroy the rig.

www.mouser.com. Part #639-CR2016-T, Sanyo CR2016 coin cell with tabs,
$3.75 in onesies. I imagine Digi-Key has something like this as well.

The non-tabbed versions are a fraction of the cost... I suspect the
tabbed ones are rather a specialty item.

Earlier this year I modded an Icom IC-228 which had one of these
tabbed batteries, nearing the end of its useful lifetime. I pulled a
coin-cell holder off of a defunct PC motherboard, stuck it down in a
convenient area inside the radio with double-sided foam tape (I used
the spot where a tone-squelch board would normally have gone),
jumpered it over to the existing coin-cell attachment leads, installed
an ordinary coin cell, and then clipped the tabs on the old battery
and removed it. The memory never lost power, and I can now replace
the battery again (in another 5-10 years) without having to desolder
anything.

Places like Battery Mart can weld tabs to any battery that they carry.
You could also just install a battery holder from a dead computer
motherboard. I have a couple here if you need one for the price of
postage.
