Alinco DR 590 modifications?????

As many of you know I am fairly new to ham and got a radio to use as a
base station this weekend. It is an ALinco dr 590. The guy told me it
had been modified to receive and transmit on extended frequercncies
even cellular.

I do not intend or want to transmitt illegally but it would be nice to
recieve the local police and aircraft if possible. When I plugged it up
I could get the frequency of my local police at 452 mhz but did not
have an antenna to see if I could hear anything or not. The vhf goes
from 130-174 I think. The uhf displays to 500 mhz. How can I tell if
this radio has been modified easily?

Also I thought cellular was 800 - 900 mhz. I could not get it to
display that.

As a last note does anyone know how I can find online a free manual for
htis book? I have looked but only been able to find the service manual.
Thanks again!

Call up your local police, transmit on their frequency, and see if they can
hear you. Don't forget to let them know where you are calling from, so they
don't have to rely on the ANI signal from your phone. This way, it will be
easier for them to find you.
This is only to check the Tx function. As far as Rx, most of these radios
have this type of coverage right out of the box.

Get a dummy load and a watt meter for that frequency.

Did you search the internet for the radio manual? there are places
that offer the manuals. Unfortunately I can't find the URL in my
favorites since I moved to FoxFire.

Why does anyone bother answering this guy. He has obviously gotten his
license out of a cracker jack box, if he has a license at all.

He asks such basic questions that anyone taking a Technician exam should
know. And why would anyone want to have a *ham radio* modified to transmit
on police frequencies? Probably just another cop wanna-be.

Hey Stryped, read through this information.
