I need to get some 1N34A diodes. Can you recommend a good supplier?
 

I plan on building a crystal radio and need to get some 1N34A diodes. (I
figure about 50 would last me a lifetime). Can anyone recommend a good
supplier who has reasonable shipping charges? I see a bunch of people
selling them but I don't want to spend more on shipping then I do on parts.

Also does anyone know where to get the old Quaker Oats containers? The ones
I see in the stores have plastic tops.

That is the problem with buying small parts. The parts are about 10 for a
dollar and you pay for the small ammount shipping an handling. Try e-bay.

Here's some scans of old oatmeal boxes if you're interested. You can
wrap one a round salt box if you really want a cardboard form.

Hi Rick,

Mouser has them as NTE replacements at .41 ea. The shipping should not be
too bad on these. Would be worth it if you could add some other parts to
your order.

Also, look for 1N270. These are also GE devices and I think they are more
available.

A little off topic, but have you checked out the Xtal Set Society? If
you're going to get into crystal sets (a great idea!) then you'll
probably want to check out they're newsletter and site. Their part's
aren't the cheapest, and I would suggest the other suppliers mentioned
in the thread, but the source of information is great.

As for the Quaker Oat containers, do you have to have Quaker? I've
found many generic brands in my area (great for my use since they are
cheaper, and I don't eat that much oatmeal, but do use them for xtal
set ideas from time to time) that still use the older style container.
Try your local "dollar" stores and such.
