desk mic advice required

Hi all

I want to try a CB mic with the trusty TS450. But from my experience I
know that CB gear varies from reasonable quality to unbelievably bad. So
thought I'd try and get some input from others experiences.

Anyone using one? What kind? How does it perform? How far can you remove
yourself from the mic and it still controls its gain?

Jack sorry but mine isnt a CB desk mike but it is cheap and cheerfull and
seems to work quite well it's a Walton WM-308
OKKK its the adonis rebadged but still it seems to do the job plus it has
all the extras like No Roger Bleep and doesnt have an auto "10-4 good buddy
" loop on it

Cheers and Beers

Hi Jack,
I don't have any CB mics. But I do have a Pryme model PMC-200 Desk Mic
with built in 4 band EQ. It also has UP/Down, Scan etc. buttons. I like it.
I believe it is the same as the Adonis but at about half the price. It is
designed to work with Kenwood, Yaesu or Icom rigs just by buying a different
mic cable that plugs into the back of the mic (no wiring needed). But if you
are using a mobile radio plan on wiring the mic.

Hi all

A while back I used a Kenwood MC85 desk mic. It was the electret type
which was able to cope with a wide variation in input level. I.e. I could
sit up close or lean back in my chair and it sorted its own levels out. I
found this very useful for late night ragchews, especially if I was typing
or writing etc at the same time.
But, it packed up. I ended up with an MC60 as a replacement, which is a
superb mic, but requires a constant distance between mouth and mic to
maintain constant audio level to the radio.

I wish to buy another MC85-style "lean back in my chair" type. I don't
want another MC85 due to the poor circuit design which led to my getting
rid of it.

Years ago I spoke to some blokes who were using CB desk mics. I forget the
make. Adonis maybe, but I might be wrong. They were singing the praises of
these things and telling me they were far better than an MC85. They
certainly sounded good and proved to be more reliable.

Thanks.

Thanks for the very few senisble recommendations. I'll look those models up
and have a think.

Funny though, I posted this to 3 ham groups. UK, Australia and the global
(ie USA) groups.
Global got two sensible replies. Aus got a sensible discussion started. And
UK started a lengthy thread trashing CBers and foundation license holders.

Does every thread have to do this? Do UK hams always have to project a
global image of being a bunch of bicker pedantic ******s?

Just a thought. Carry on.

It's a cultural thing.

Yes, Jack. Absolutely EVERY thread started in uk.radio.amateur, after
only two or three 'overs', degenerates into trashing CBers and all those
whose are deemed never to taken the 'proper' Radio Amateurs' Examination
(not just those with Foundation Licences). It's all really a bit sad.

I think you may have to abbreviate the word w*nk*r!!!...or maybe use
t*ss*r!!!...as this could sometimes be interpreted as someone who tosses
pancakes...

If you really wanted a sensible answer why on Earth did you post to this
NG???!!!...

At this point I will give you a few sensible pointers...

Myself...I have a MD-100A8X...I also have a MD-200A8X...I have 2
MD-1c8's...I have a Heil headset pro plus(with both hc4 and hc5 inserts)...I
have lots of standard mic's...I also have a W2IHY 8 band equaliser...

So here's the crux...you wanna sit back and relax put on the headset...use a
foot-pedal...and the chill out zone is yours...you will still have 2 hands
free to do whatever it is you wish to do with 2 free hands...

Does the tenth word in the first paragraph have any relevance to your

Yes Ian, it is sad. Makes you wonder if a moderated group might be
worthwhile. I am not normally a fan of moderation as I support free speech.
But a group with an "ist" filter might be good. (sexist, racist, CBist,
license classist). Some guys tried on yahoo, but ended up with a collection
of separate and poorly supported cliches.

I co-run the UK CB Radio yahoo group and take the view that all messages are
allowed, no matter how confrontational, so long as they are not abusive or
way off-topic. And it works well. In 3 years we've only have a few off topic
spammers to warn off.

For ordinary men - yes.
For really big boys - maybe two are required.
