Rewinding a rheostat to make it a variable iunductor

I came up with this idea to make a tiny antenna tuner. Thought maybe I
could remove the wire on a rheostat and rewind it with copper wire so I
can make a long wire antenna tuner .

Check a back issues of QST. Someone did it (miracal antenna)
in a construction article.

They wrapped a ferrite toroid (large one) and use the wiper and
bearing from a Wire wound rheostat to select taps on it. I tried it
for a very small Pi tuner and it was decent.

Hmmm...not a bad idea. I have no use for a Miracle Whip antenna, but
I think I'll try that approach as another alternative to Phil Salas,
AD5X's portable vertical base matching techniques. It might even be
feasible for the tuneable component of a center loading coil. I'm
gonna do some experimentin'!
