Article about a portable PC that runs on 12v?
 

I saw something in the last year or two about building a PC that runs
entirely on 12V and with low power consumption. Does anyone know
where I can find that article or website?

I think I remember something in QST awhile back, but I'm sure it was more
than a couple years ago. IIRC, the author had a bad battery pack for his
laptop, so he rebuilt it by removing the bad section and providing a
connector to bridge the remaining batteries (for charging) and to power the
laptop externally with a 12VDC supply.

I heard a guy on a radio program just last week describing a small
notebook - about half to 3/4 the size of a normal one. Uses flash
drives instead of a hard drive. Said power consumption wasn't much more
than a well equipped cellphone. Sounds incredible, don't know if such a
thing is actually on the market yet. Just FYI.

You might take a look at

to see what they have to offer. Apparently it's not difficult to get
a 12 volt input computer power supply that fits one of the standard
compact cases.

MacBook Air, Asus EEE, Acer 100, and a whole bunch of no name clones.

If you are in the UK, Elonex ONE, which sells for 100 quid.

The thing you want is the Asus EEE PC:

Don't bother with the Windows version - it makes it almost as expensive as a
full-size laptop, and suffers from all the multitude of Windows problems.
The original version runs Xandros Linux, and there's a /huge/ range of
software available at no cost, including lots of electronic design and ham
radio programs.

I use one for a mobile packet station, for logging and for morse or teletype
modes.

the similar devices from Acer and Dell run on 12 V -DC

They might not be selling where you live, but over here in the UK the shops
can't get enough of them. The Linux ones are outselling the XP ones by a
factor of 4 to 1 - partly because of the price, and partly because the
performance with XP is pretty bad, especially when you add all that
anti-virus nonsense.

I just got four of the 10" for £135 each (about $200). They run Xandros Linux
and are excellent for most computer users - you can browse web pages, write
and receive email and type documents with just the basic supplied software.
Performance is amazingly quick, and you don't need to worry about viruses.
There are lots of ham radio programs available free on the 'net for them...

I know I dont have a problem with Linux either but casual users here
in the
states are afraid of it. I use Linux or various versions daily at work
and love
it. They are selling for about $270 here in the states. Still a
bargain. I was in
the process of building a car PC but that project ended when I found
net-
books.
