Wondering if any of you who use Dimesion 4 software to keep the PC clock
accurate, have you noticed that it appears the site (tick.usno.navy.mil)
that is used for time updates is down??? My last correction was on 29
April 2009. Keeps timing out. Anyone else see this?

Make sure your firewall allows it. Check your logs. The site works for me.

Hmmm...mine used to work. In fact, it was working fine up until April
29th...I selected a different site (St. Paul, MN) last night and it is
updating normally...

I just changed my config to point to that server and it's working OK for
me.

I usually use my ISP's own time server.

Thanks...I suspect it's something with my ISP. I have lots of these
things happening...someone sends me a link to a webpage and I copy/paste
the address and it says it can't find the site yet it seems everyone
else can. I changed to the nss.nts.umn.edu site and it's working fine.

Actually, I did that with the same results. Several others didn't seem
to work, but I found one in St. Paul, MN that works fine. Others have
reported that "tick" is working fine for them. I suspect something with
my ISP as I have had quite a few problems viewing websites that others
send me a link to and I get the "site could not be found" error message.
I've called my ISP and they say that everything is working OK. Some
have suggested my firewall may be blocking sites, etc., but the tick
site had been working fine up until April 29th when I got the last
update and I haven't dinked around with any router settings here for
ages...mystifying :(

Hey OM:

I likes to use tcpdump, or the GUI version Wireshark. These baby's are
great sniffers I found a java problem I had once, because of a setting
in a router, I had no control over. Seems someone got the great idea
to block ICMP protocol going thru the router. It was this very
protocol that java used to acknowledge the extension of the MTU from
the max allowable 1500 to a larger MTU. My computer would sit there
waiting forever for that acknowledgment it was never going to get.
Later I found out why ICMP was blocked. As the router had been taken
down by a denial of service request attack via ICMP. Lowering the MTU
on my computer to allow for java to extend the lower MTU without
having to do a ICMP request, fixed the trouble. I ended up using 1300
MTU.

Then there's whois, it's possible you have the IP addy stored away in
the program and it doesn't use a DNS to look up the IP addy and the
mil site may have changed the IP addy in which case your program won't
find the site it was looking for. Your browser will find it if it's
using a DNS to look up the site. But if the settings are right/wrong
it is possible for the browser to use a cached IP addy that would be
stale, and so you don't go to where you wanted to go.
