A fellow I work with showed me his new antenna buy for his handy-talky.
A slim Jim. The punch line is low angle radiation boosting apparent
gain. I bought one too. Under $30 with feeder and connector.

My first homebrew antenna (and my first antenna other than the rubber
ducky that came with my handheld) was a Slim-Jim J-pole. You can make
them up for about $2 or so... 300Ù television ribbon cable, some coax,
and a connector. There are a few construction guides on the 'net, and
I can vouch for their performance.

Pretty expensive, considering it might have 10 bucks worth of parts.
Are people really so bereft of skills today that they can't solder a
few wires together?

I think it's more than some people *just don't feel like* soldering a few
wires together...

Same reason plenty of people pay to have their car's oil changed...

Sure, I have the necessary skills to order a bnc connector, coax and
twin line, then realise (as I did) that I needed a different connector
which comes in five variants; but I don't have the
UHF antenna analyzer (do you, or do you just fumble it?) so I leave that
kind of effort to people who really really enjoy that kind of busy work,
while I get on with what I enjoy... grin

That's hard to believe! You'll be telling me next people go to a car
wash rather than getting a bucket of warm water and a chamois cloth out,
to wash their car.... grin

Let's get serious: this is the Land of the Free - Free to hire somebody
to walk your dog, clean your windows, and cut your grass....
