I still like the simple electronics. However, simple receivers like that
just won't work for me now. Something about the 5KW AM transmitter in my
back yard...

The same for me 50 years ago. Home town was Portishead, and the TXs of
the international shipping Portiishead Radio were half a mile away across
the valley!

What 1/2 mile? I'm talking 50 yards (at the most) from my house to
their nearest tower.

My back yard (a pretty standard U.S. city lot from the 60's) directly
abuts their transmitter field. Their ground plane wires run right up to
the fence.

Sounds like a tuned antenna with a full-wave rectifier
could power some QRP projects there.....

LOL, not sure it even needs to be tuned :) Good thing I like the radio
station - I get it on my phone... my stereo...

It did take a bit to get the interference cleaned up when I first moved
here. But that was 18 years ago, and I haven't had any problems since.

5KW 50 yards away?
You could pick that up on your bath taps!

My biggest bugbear used to be Radio Moscow bleeding all over the MW AM
bands in the 70s on my home made junk pile of a radio. Thankfully those
days are past. Nice to see that My junk pile of a radio -components
connected by drawing pins (thumb tacks) on a wooden board which may
explain the breakthrough - has outlasted Radio Moscow.
I still have the radio and it still works.

Urban legend here is of some guy close to Droitwich long wave TX who
had several coils wound around the inside wall of his garden shed, and was
discovered after complaints of poor signal strength in certain directions,
subsequently believe to have been prosecuted over some trumped-up charge.

A constructional method carried on today as the "Manhattan" method, and
stick-on
isolated isalnds available from the GQRP Club.

They also sell a tool to create such islands onto a blank PCB.

AIUI, those 10MOhm resistors in your junk box that you are never going to
use
provide an almost-insulated stand-off.

Yep. And it can be a bit of a hassle on the lower HF bands, but good
grounding takes care of most of it.

But my dream is to get a few nighttime hours and load the towers on 160.
It's on 630Khz, so the antenna farm should load nicely on 1890Khz :)
And since it has a directional signal, I should be able to change the
phasing to point it almost anywhere I want :)
