Can anyone reccomend a good small surface mount FM receiver chip that is

currently availible?

Is it possible to do FM reception with a Direct conversion RX and some

simple DSP?

I really like the Philips SA604AD (
http://www-
us.semiconductors.philips.com/pip/SA604AD.html). It's easy to use, it's
got plenty of internal gain, and it works well at a variety of IFs, from
455 kHz to 10.7 or 21.4 MHz.

I've built several decent-performing receiver sections for NBFM audio,
NBFM FSK data, and WBFM (broadcast) audio with the SA604 and various
filters available from Digi-Key.

Naturally, everybody that sells them appears to be out of stock right
now.

I'm pretty sure Philips has discontinued that part.
