HP8640B output amplifier failure
 
I've seen HP numbers cross referenced to 2Nxxxx, but where I can't recall.
Have you tried Google? Also ask on the boatanchor group.

Looks like Agilent has a replacement part:

Part Part Description
Number Reference Used In Price Part
Category
5086-7068
[Obsolete] ORD-08640-67002
Status : No Longer Orderable.
Type : New support part for which Agilent
owns the design specifications.

Replaced By 08640-67002, which is no longer orderable. They'll
exchange for a (? refurbished) part.

I found this at http://www.parts.agilent.com/, after a little
digging.

If you _do_ do the exchange, please let us know how it turns
out and what neighborhood the price was in. My 8640B will die
one of these days, too.

The last time I asked Agilent for a replacement part (failed switching
supply) it cost more than the analyzer. We used a ginned up ATX supply with
some DC-DC converters.

Hi folks,

Many thanks for your comments. Indeed it is a kind of gold TO3 device. In
the mean time I also found the "Sphere" junk shop. They sell an amplifier
unit but it says: one of the gold devices fails, but not known which one. I
think I know....Will try and search further.

Harke,

I had the same thing happen to an 8640a. The failure was the output gold IC.
I found one for about $150 bucks. The failure happened when I had some
low voltage ac get back into the output, and I happened to have the attenuator
in the max out (no attenuation) setting.

As a note to anyone who has an 8640a or b, there is a reverse power option
that might save the power amp. I found the best preventative is to use a 20db
external N connector pad connected right at the output. Just divide the output
voltage level by 10 (20 db). eg, if you have .75 volt output, you actually
have .075 volt output from the 20 db pad.
