Don't even try. Buy a small quantity of Deoxit, available at electrical
supply houses. It is a bit pricey, but the smallest quantity will last
for years (it is used VERY sparingly). It is unquestionably the best
contact cleaner/lubricant that has ever been made.

Infinitely better. Besides, WD-40 is not a lubricant, it is a solvent.
And it leaves a residue.

As Bob indicated, get Deoxit. You can order it from
the manufacturer (Caig). Their online store can be found at:

Or Radio Shack has it under 910-3879 (special order). $7.95

Speaking of contact cleaner, anyone remember that Radio Shack
had two contact cleaners, one generic and another for color TV?
