Are there any IC sockets, where the pins go outwards from the socket, rather
than downwards into the PCB?

Ha, quite amazing, though wirewraps was obsolete technolgy.


I've never used it for rf projects, but for digital it still works just fine
for prototyping. Assuming you still have a supply of chips that are dips.

I have had good luck bending pins out with the socket about .05 inches about
the board. Then trim to fit the pads provided. Some very narrow sockets
you can bend the pins out at the point they would normally seat. Others,
with the tab at a right angle to the body can't be bent at all. To much
chance of breakage!
