great way to learn microcontrollers!

Just thought I would mention to all newsgroup readers the incredible deal
available from Zilog. They have their Zilog Encore Z8 development kit,
which includes a development board, eZ8 processor, C compiler, assembler,
simulator, IDE, cabling, documentation and more for a mere $40 US
(available from Mouser and others).

I have been using this development kit for a few months. It is a fantastic
way to learn about microprocessors, microcontrollers, C and assembler
programming, for a great price. A C compiler alone will cost you more than
$40 for most controllers. I have no beneficial interest in Zilog, but their
product is terrific.

MicroChip has a similar package for their processor called a "PICkit":
http://www.microchip.com/1010/pline/...ckit/index.htm

It's $36.

This is what I used as the control platform for my HF Lab system:

From the above page:
Important Note:
The PICkit(tm) 1 FLASH Starter Kit software will not run on Windows 98
1st edition. DO NOT INSTALL THIS SOFTWARE ON WINDOWS 98 1ST EDITION

The Zilog documentation says pretty much the same thing.

Yeah, I have the z8!Encore dev kit (£23), not bad at all.

Complete dev kit, including in-circuit debugger, can't complain at that,
although their compiler has a few bugs (especially when code optimization is
enabled).

I'm running it on Windows 98SE and it's fine. I think the warning is due to
the need for a USB port on the PC and only Win98SE and above officially
support USB????

The 6.30 IDE (and I assume the 6.40, didn't check) requires that Internet
Exploder be installed, I don't recall if it's 5 or 5.5, but a fairly recent
version. As best I can tell, all it does with IE is splash up some readme's
about a bunch of USB drivers, but the install checks for IE and won't
install without it. Wouldn't surprise me if it also checked for SE or
later, but that I didn't verify.

I'd guess the Zilog kit, like the PICkit, uses a USB interface. No
support in Win98 1st edition as released (although I believe that one
can install an aftermarket USB support package).
