Looking for cheap but good sounding AF stage parts, kits, suggestions.
All my books are twenty years old.

Um, what sort? Are you looking for low-level input with low noise and
low distortion? Or are you looking for power output stages? How much
power? Are you looking for something that will run efficiently from a
battery supply, or will it be line powered? Do you have power supply
voltage preferences? Please tell us a bit more about what you want to
accomplish.

A visit to web sites like http://www.analog.com/index_noflash.html,
http://www.national.com/, and http://www.ti.com/ will get you to
selection trees and data sheets for audio (and other) ICs. All three
of those have interesting ap notes and articles about various aspects
of audio design, too. You can also make very high quality audio
stages with discrete parts, but if your time is worth much, those
might not be so cheap as the modern IC solutions.

Cheers,
Tom
