Default Would it be worthwhile starting an on-line parts ordering house?

I have been pondering this idea on and off, but can't tell if it would be
worth the effort to do something like this. Can you make a decent living
selling small quantities of parts - passives, crystals, oscillators, solid
state, IC's , even exotic things like back diodes and mmic's - via mail
order. Or, do the large parts houses like Digi Key have the field sewn up?

We have a few companies like that here in the UK. They have been going
for years so they must be doing reasonably well.

They don't have very extensive stocks, but they are very useful for
small quantities of standard parts as they don't charge much for postage.

Further to the above, here is the web site of one of those suppliers I use:

I used this lot once. The first (and last) time I ordered they
charged me double. Since I ordered by credit card and had to deal with
both parties, it took several months to sort the mess out. Never
again.

My opinion is worth what you've paid for it.

I've been using them for about 5 years without any problems.

Really? That's quite odd. I've never had a problem with any
disputed charge on any of my cards. They've always been settled
to my satisfaction basically with one call to the credit-card
company.
