Desert Rat Dilemma

Hello to all,

As I approach senility I keep on having problems like the following:

I notice on the Desert Rat PDF file, DR2, that a short note states
that the coil should be wound around the PCB. I have never heard of
doing this before but it hardly matters as I had planned on building
this circuit on perfboard or Manhatten style, and using my usual pill
bottle as the coil form.

But now I am curious. Is there a board available for this project? I
would like to know this method of winding a coil on a PCB as it might
come in handy for a future project.

Or, have I just made an idiot of myself for misunderstanding how this
simple coil should be wound? I am sure I will have many who will be
glad to point this out to me.

73 and good wishes to all de WA2AFD

Me too, and the frightening thing is that I'm still working every day and
driving on the highway! BTW, don't those pill bottles make wonderful coil
forms? Nice high Q. Good for storing small hardware, transistors, all the stuff
we used to use baby food jars for in the old days. And, the supply seems to
increase every day, just like wire coat hangers. You have to do SOMETHING with
'em or they'll take over!

Howard-

There may be a misunderstanding. I didn't see the note, but had the impression
the coil was to be wound on a 35mm film cannister.

Looking at the other references, there were a couple of alternate plastic coil
forms suggested, with differing numbers of turns depending on diameter.

Works well with plastic 35mm film cans as well...
Carefully drill a hole in the top the size of your coax - snug fit. If its
one of those fancy adult-proof tops, this may not be good. Go to a film can.

Cut a slit from the hole to the edge, with the trusty ole' Exacto knife.

Slip coax into hole via slit, connector towards indside of top.

Pull coax so connector is up against top.

Snap cover onto container.

Hopefully this is useful in some way...
