amateur radio

Hi, I'm part of an amateur radio astronomy group at a college trying to
get a dish on top of a roof to work. We have much of the equipment, but
are having trouble putting it together, as far as how exactly to hook
everything up. Would this be the right newsgroup to post to? Thanks.

Possibly; couldn't hurt to try. But if your questions are specific to
antenna work, you might have better luck in rec.radio.amateur.antenna.

You might try looking over the sites on the following web ring.
http://a.webring.com/hub?ring=radioastro
If you need more information, you can email some of them who are
doing radio astronomy.

Sounds like you're trying to listen for signals at the hydrogen line.
Probably would be helpful to be more specific about exactly what you're
trying to accomplish. Is an academic advisor available, or did the club
just get a bunch of (rather high-grade!) equipment donated to it with no
further guidance?

Hams involved in this type of work are often associated with the SETI
League (
http://www.setileague.org/index.html). Not sure if there are
any SETI folks around the UDub or Seattle in general -- maybe you should
drop a line to and see if they can point you in the
right direction, so to speak. I'm not very knowledgeable about this
stuff myself, but it sounds interesting.
