What do you mean?

Take a look at its specification for the price, with
many of the bugbears claimed to have been resolved.

Well, yes, so you have to set targets for homebrewing that are
realistic and don't require the resources of several companies to
achieve. I think this has always been the case but as technology
accelerates the one-man-band can only do so much even with re-use of
the work of others.

However, should always be possible for us to program an FPGA (or
whatever is its modern equivalent) to achieve the same?

SDR actually opens up a whole new era of homebrewing, where you can
design a receive feature (software) yourself and apply it to your existing
receiver hardware, opening up some new capability, and as a bonus you
can distribute it so your friends can use it as well.
