Au contraire, for a modern digital radio could be effectively
controlled by the most ancient of digital interfaces, namely
Morse Code, requiring only the use of an abnormally long dash
to get into menu mode.

You could get a list of hundreds of cities, countries, call signs and
signal strengths via morse as a wspr interface or you could just spend a
few seconds glancing at a map display on a screen and see how your
signal propagation is working..
Horses for courses. We are visual creatures and some information is most
efficiently gathered visually.

I use 5 and 7 inch Waveshare screen on my raspberry pi for radio (wspr
mostly) but also for gaming machines and a quiz buzzer.
A little fiddly but they work well. The official 7 inch screen is a lot
easier to set up.
