Last Monday the 14th, WIA Director Robert Broomhead appeared as a guest in the studio of Melbourne's 94.1 3WBC FM on the stations "Tech Talk Radio" progr am. By all accounts the interview on Melbourne's Tech Talk Radio show appeared to go off quite well. Andrew commented that their streaming servers seemed to have significantly more connections than ever before !@! (well we did promote it via the WIA news broadcast) Heres the link to the Tech Talk Radio website http://www.techtalkradio.com.au/ Here's the direct link to listen to an MP3 file of the show. http://www.techtalkradio.com.au/down...odcast.com/TTR /20-2007.mp3 Tech Talk radio can be heard at 8:00pm on 94.1 3WBC FM and streaming live to the web and available in MP3 format to download to your IPOD. Library and Information Week This coming week, the 21st to 27th of May is Library and Information Week, so what better time to see what your library has relating to Amateur Radio. Some public libraries hold Amateur Radio manuals and antenna building books. University libraries are generally open to the public, and many hold both Amateur Radio and professional communications journals. For those looking for back-issues of Australian radio and electronics hobby magazines, the National Library, or your State Library, or the Northern Territory Library should be able to help. The National Library runs a website called Libraries Australia. It allows you to search for material in over 800 Australian libraries at once. Google "librariesaustralia" as one word. It can also help you locate nearby libraries. If your local library does not hold an item, they can generally obtain it through Inter-Library Loan. If your library is weak in the radio field, you can suggest they purchase relevant material, or you or your club could donate something. Linking people with ideas @ your library http://librariesaustralia.nla.gov.au For WIA National News, this is Julian Sortland, VK2YJS. AMATEUR RADIO - HOME OF THE GOOD GUYS IOTA (Islands of the Air) chasers of the last 15 years will know of the enormou s contribution that Kadek, YC9BU has made to the program in both activating rare Indonesian islands and acting as qsl manager for about 26 other such operations around Indonesia. Just last month, Kadek suffered a devastating house fire which destroyed his ho use, shack and all his belongings. Fortunately his family are all safe. A number of amateurs from around the world who have benefited greatly from Kade k's enormous contribution to IOTA chasing feel that some "Ham Spirit" should prevail and ha ve arranged for a collection to be made to assist Kadek in getting back on air to something like before. Naturally, Kadek is very down at the moment and Amateur Radio, and in particula r IOTA chasing, are going to be very low on his priorities, as he tries to re-establish his you ng family. A web site link has been produced at www.mdxc.org/yb9bu which details the a ppeal, has a glowing reference from Roger, G3KMA, RSGB IOTA Manager and shows some pictures of the t otal devastation he has suffered. Donations can be made directly to the website or if you wish donations will be collected in the Australasian region by Peter Forbes VK3QI. All donations will be acknowledged on the website (unless anonymous) and to fac ilitate an early positive outcome, a cut-off date of July 1 has been set, however later donation s will be accepted. ( Peter Forbes VK3QI ) AROUND VK in 80 Seconds. VK1 Mt Ginini Repeater Site Last Sunday Steve VK2FHMC, Mark VK1HMS and Alan VK1WX installed the new outer door. See you there. (Ken VK7DY/Reg, VK7KK) From VK1WIA this is the National News Service - Tune in today...Focus on Tomorrow INTERNATIONAL NEWS The ARRL has submitted an interference mitigation plan to the US Department of Defence (DoD) as part of an effort to resolve reported interference from dozens of 70 cm amateur repeaters to US military radar systems on both coasts. Earlier this year, the US Air Force asked the FCC to order dozens of repeater systems to either eliminate interference to its "PAVE PAWS" missile and satellite detection and tracking radars or shut down. "We are waiting the response of the DoD representative to the proposal and will continue to provide information as to its status when it becomes available," commented ARRL Regulatory Information Specialist Dan Henderson, N1ND. The situation affects 15 repeaters within less than 100 miles of Otis Air Force Base on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and more than 100 repeaters within some 140 miles of Beale Air Force Base near Sacramento, California. PAVE PAWS facilities occupy essentially the entire 70 cm band -- one factor that makes mitigation difficult. Feeding upward of 1800 active antenna elements , the broadband radar transmitters emit an average power output of more than 145 kW. WW SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS --- ATV (Every pixel tells a story) ATV over internet in US On Tuesday the 8th of May, the ATV group in Rockford, IL exchanged video and audio with the group of ATV'ers based in California, all being part of the Amateur Television Network (ATN). Tuesday night is ATV Net night in the Los Angeles area at 8 PM (10 PM in Illinois). During the net, video and audio was transmitted from Don Hill, KE6BXT, who is located in Mission Viejo, CA over the Internet using a Slingbox, picked up on my computer, using the video out to give a full screen picture that was then re-broadcast over the local W9ATN ATV repeater here in Rockford, IL. Likewise, when it was our turn to transmit, we used another Slingbox at our QTH in Rockford to transmit video received from myself (WB9MMM), John, KA9SOG, and Mikayla, KC9HVQ to the group of ATV repeaters that are all linked together. So, we were all able to see each other checking into the ATV net across the country. Many of you have heard of IRLP, and I would like to suggest that this might be working towards ITVLP (not my term, someone else thought of it), but I need to clarify that this was all done manually where IRLP you can dial in using DTMF. Will we get there some day. I bet we will! Will others that have ATV repeaters join in on Tuesday nights. I hope so. It was a lot of fun. Invitation from ATN - everyone can watch and check in via keyboard: Take a look at the email and internet editions of this broadcast for the website address to check out these ATV activities. www.ac6rb.com The latest issue of Amateur Television Quarterly has a good article about all the California, Nevada, and Arizona (with plans for NM) ATV repeaters that are linked and how it can be done (not using the Internet). (Gene Harlan, WB9MMM via the HAM-ATV Mailing list via vk7news) www.hampubs.com WW SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS --- RADIO AMATEUR OLD-TIMERS http://www.raotc.org.au ARRL congratulates centenarian member: The ARRL has extended its congratulations to League member Harvey Baalke, W9HNX, of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, who celebrated his 100th birthday March 23. Wrote ARRL CEO David Sumner, K1ZZ, on the League's behalf: "I seldom have the privilege of writing to an ARRL member on the occasion of their 100th birthday! Please accept belated congratulations on behalf of the Board, staff and your fellow members of the ARRL. I know you have seen many changes since you were first licensed. One thing that has not changed is the unique camaraderie among radio amateurs of different generations and cultures. Best wishes from the worldwide Amateur Radio community. Sincere 73." Baalke first joined the ARRL in 1936. WW SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS --- RESCUE RADIO EMERGENCY FREQUENCIES REGION ONE 21.360 - 18.160 - 14.300 - 7.060 - 3.760 MHz. Amateur Radio played a critical role May 4 and 5 in rescuing two people from a foundering sailboat that had been en route to Colombia. Members of the Maritime Mobile Service Net (MMSN) and Intercontinental Net on 14.300 MHz were involved in getting the man and woman aboard the 35-foot s/v Sailboat to safety after they ran into trouble some 700 nautical miles southwest of the Galapagos Islands in the South Pacific. The couple, identified as Gunnar Hansen and Grethe Haraldsen, both Norwegian nationals and neither an amateur licensee, put out a Mayday call on the Intercon/MMSN 14.300 MHz frequency the morning of May 4 after Sailabout sustained damage to its bow -- possibly as a result of losing a forestay, which helps to keep the mast upright -- and started taking on water. Thanks to its efficient pumps, the sailboat remained afloat. The main concern was for the mast, which supported the antenna for the vessel's HF radio. Fortunately, it remained standing. The conversation on the MMSN reportedly was widely monitored by others in the sailing and cruising communities. The Sailabout had only recently been equipped with an HF SSB transceiver. Amateur Radio relays alerted the US Coast Guard at Alameda, California, to the Sailabout's predicament. At the Coast Guard's request, relayed via ham radio, Hansen set off the vessel's Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB). Throughout the ordeal, various Amateur Radio stations were instrumental in updating the Coast Guard, which never had direct contact with Sailabout. BB's DIARY ROOM - THE FUTURE, IN AMATEUR RADIO 2008 Sept 13 Alarameet 2008 will be held in Ulverstone Tasmania on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th September 2008. REWIND - A LOOK BACK IN HISTORY (Will McGhie VK6UU is WIA National Historian) Beechworth - Busiest Telegraph Station The following is sourced to the Border Morning Mail from a story on the 8th of May 2007 by Brad Worrall about Beechworth being the busiest telegraph station in the world. It is titled "Beechworth tappers `busiest in world'" Beechworth now lays claims to the busiest telegraph station in the world. In the past 12 months the four-man band of morse code volunteers has tapped out more than 3800 messages. Leo Nette, one of the dots and dashes experts, says they are the busiest in Australia. "And we are pretty confident we have the southern hemisphere covered," he said. "So we put on the internet that we are the busiest in the world and no one has challenged that." Mr Nette and his fellow telegraph operators are all former telegram boys. "It gets in your blood, any old Morse operator can tell you that," he said. "These days it is a novelty, we have tourists by the bus load wanting to send a telegram to friends and family." An informal network of fellow enthusiasts around the globe make sure the telegrams reach their destination, generally posted to the address from the nearest telegraph station. Mr Nette says a message for Prime Minister John Howard was one that raised eyebrows. "It wasn't particularly complimentary, but we never received a reply back," he said. Mr Nette's group is now looking to the future, in partnership with Telstra, teaching the elderly to use SMS. www.bordermail.com.au/news/bm/local/771867.html (Brad Worrall, Border Mail via the vk7news) THE FINAL FINAL WALKS Jeff VK4XJJ is still going strong on his walk across Australia. (Bill Johnson VK2FWGJ) Hi everyone This is 7J7ACT, Simon Bernard, an American ham operator living in Japan. I am working as a back country guide for skiers and boarders in the mountains here. You may have heard of the avalanche that occurred on Valentines day. It just so happened that the 7 people who hired me as a guide that day were ski patrol from Thredbo. We came upon the victims of the avalanche and after alerting the police on my hand held transceiver, worked for the next 3 hours in blizzard conditions searching and digging out the buried and giving first aid to keep those alive until help finally came. I have been invited to give a speech at the seminar about the rescue and will be in VK country from May 26th to June 4th. I am looking for a local ham near Thredbo/Jindabyne who would allow me to guest operate on a weekday as the weekends will be for the seminar and other emergency training. If you can help, please contact me at You can also find my contact info at QRZ.com or on my HP at hakkodapowder.com Hope to hear everyone on the air.
