WIANEWS for week commencing AUGUST 26 2007
This is WIANEWS for week commencing AUGUST 26 2007
NATIONAL NEWS We start with news from Peter VK4OD who as contest manager of this years RD contest says logs are being received with errors! "Good morning listeners, it has been particularly pleasing to receive all those logs this week, to date we have a total of 230 Electronic and postal logs, to those that have not yet sent in your log, however your part is not complete until you get your logs away. Some of the logs received have revealed some errors, however, I contact those senders before declaring the winner’s Please get your logs in as soon as possible before the cut-off date, Under RD 2007 Rules Para 17b In all cases, logs must be received by last mail on Monday 10th September, 2007. Late entries will not be eligible. Back to you graham." Well from the RD weekend to the ILLW Weekend. Last weekends International Lighthouse and Lightship weekend saw folk from Amateur Radio Victoria activate the Lighthouse and Time Ball Tower at Point Gellibrand near Williamstown with the call sign VK3WI. A barbeque fed hungry operators at lunch time and a kettle and coffee kept the well fed operators awake when conditions on the air deteriorated. VK3WI worked all bands and the whole place was buzzing with activity. Jim VK3PC kept a watchful eye on the proceedings including guiding visiting operators to have a go at the main station. Apparently VK3WI had around 400 contacts and more than 23 lighthouses during the weekend. Throughout the weekend, locals gathered to have a look and ask questions and were handed the now familiar “Calling CQ” brochures. The weather held out but was very cold. Other than that, it was an action packed ILLW weekend and a very good time was had by all. Well done all. AMATEUR RADIO - HOME OF THE GOOD GUYS And a NEW home for the 'good guys' of the C.G.A.R.C. The Central Goldfields Amateur Radio Club has new club rooms in the old TAFE building at 59-63 Victoria Street North, on the corner of Station Street, Maryborough. The club meets there on the first Friday of the month at 8pm in a room rented from the St John Ambulance Depot. The CGARC is a very friendly and active club responsible for a considerable number of new Foundation Licensees getting on air. Amateur Radio Victoria say inquiries can be made by contacting the club president Peter Rafferty VK3CC telephone 5460 4387 or for more details just goggle its webpage. (http://gcarc.amateurradio.com.au/) We spoke of "Good Guys".. none so "good' as silent key Chris Jones.... SFX:- Recording of Chris Jones talking on air… Yes that was the voice of Chris Jones Jones VK2ZDD - silent key. Yesterday Saturday the 25th of August was the 12 month anniversary since Chris became silent key. Chris was an amazing person, his passion and enthusiasm for the Wireless Institute of Australia, the Foundation Licence, Amateur Radio, in fact everybody’s health and well being in general was just simply amazing. Chris has so many friends and mates and we still do still miss him. Someone else who was very close to Chris was Steve Leatheam VK2BGL. "It has been just on a year now since we all lost our very good friend Chris Jones VK2ZDD. I was with Chris when he passed away on Friday morning August 25 last year. It was extremely sudden and was a great shock to all of his friends around the world. So what has happened in the last year to all of us who were close to Chris? Well first and foremost, his best mate, Max his much loved Labrador I am pleased to report is fit and well in the care of Anne, Chris's sister and her family. He has lost a lot of his excess weight and at the age of 8 is a very active pooch spending lots of time enjoying weekends on their friend's farm down in the Southern Highlands. And he still does not bark. Chris's house in Menai has been sold and is now no longer in the family. We all have treasured memories of the great parties and get togethers in his home. Our EchoIRLP node IRLP 6222 EchoLink VK2BGL-L is still very active and has been relocated to Engadine with a VHF getaway as good if not slightly better than the old location in Chris's home at Menai. Its frequency 146.550 is still populated with many of Chris's old friends and is one of the most active VHF simplex channels in Sydney. The Papua New Guinea village library fund at last count was just nudging $10000 but there has been a delay on building the premises by the government. The money is to be given to Paul and the village elders to purchase the books when the building is further advanced. And myself? who had Chris as a good friend since 1966 and lived and worked with him for the last few years of his life? Well I have retired back to my old home town of Kiama on the South Coast where I spent the first 17 years of my life. Would you call that a Sea change or Back to My Roots? 73 from Steve VK2BGL". (6five) VK3 web service:- http://www.amateurradio.com.au/news/ From next Sunday, the 2nd of September, a number of changes are happening to this VK3BWI networked broadcast. With details here’s Ross Pittard VK3FCE. "Following a review by Amateur Radio Victoria of its putting to air of the WIA weekly broadcast a number of changes will happen. The main ones are that from the first broadcast in September it will go to air half an hour earlier at 10.30am and a 40 metre call back re-introduced. Amateur Radio Victoria has spent more than $3500 to upgrade its VK3BWI HF transmission facilities with new feeders, multiple antennas, a new 80 metre transmitter and a frequency change for 40 metres to 7158 kilohertz. The 40 metre call back, when it begins on the 2nd of September, will particularly welcome reports from Foundation Licensees and the broadcast’s interstate listeners. Regular listeners may have noticed a change to the 2-metre call-back through the VK3RMM repeater. The new format is a ‘check-in’ by callsign only session, followed by the F-Troop Net Controller who conducts a call back for anyone wishing to make a comment or has a question. These changes and much more, all in support of the WIA’s weekly broadcast. I’m Ross Pittard VK3FCE and you’re listening to VK1WIA." This will also be the first function for the new Queensland Advisory Committee. We would like to invite one attendee per club to the lunch. This will ensure that we have a good coverage of radio clubs in Queensland. Please consider sending a club member to attend the lunch, and talk to and hear from Michael Owen and Ewan McLeod. Further details of the venue will be coming. Please advise attendees to me or Ken Fuller Regards, Don Wilschefski VK4BY Chairman Queensland Advisory Committee INTERNATIONAL NEWS From Maine to Oregon, from Florida to Finland, more than 5,000 ham radio operators gathered in downtown Huntsville last weekend to browse the latest in radio electronics, learn about trends in the field and, for many, finally meeting face to face. This year's event drew more participants than normal. About 4,000 operators typically attend the annual Huntsville Hamfest, said Charlie Emerson, vice president of the Huntsville Hamfest Association. This year the national convention of the ARRL drew an extra 1,000 operators and vendors to the Von Braun Centre’s South Hall. And a small delegation of almost 100 more operators were there for a Global Amateur Radio Emergency Communication Conference. "They made their U.S. debut in Huntsville, Alabama," Emerson said. While amateur radio is a hobby for many, the Federal Communications Commission set aside the radio frequencies above the AM broadcast band for use in emergencies. Ham operators must be licensed by the FCC. Many wore their call letters on caps or badges so they could meet one another for the first time during the three-day event. ================================================== ===================== NEWS FROM ARNEWSLINE HAMWATCH AND THE NATIONAL NIGHT OUT The mayor of South El Monte, California, has praised ham radio operators who assist her city and the nation in time of need and she did so in a most unusual way. On the air. Take a listen: -- Mayor Figueroa: "To all of you Hamwatch operators, thank you for helping all of your cities. National Night Out - remember to say no to crime, leave your lights on and thank you for doing a great job. God bless you and god bless America." -- That's Mayor Blanca Figueroa and the story of how she got to thank the ham community for its involvement is actually a story unto itself. One that kind of involves us here at Newsline. At least peripherally. On Tuesday August 7th, communities across the nation participated in the "National Night Out." This is an opportunity for communities to promote activities aimed at increasing security with programs such as Neighbourhood Watch, Community Emergency Response Teams and of course Amateur Radio. One such event was held in the City of South El Monte, a suburb of Los Angeles. That's where members of the Temple Station Hamwatch Group were present to display radio equipment and answer questions related to Ham Radio. As part of the demonstration Deputy Hector Figueroa, KE6VRL, used a portable station to transmit what the group calls the "Amateur Radio Newsline - Check-In Net" at its regularly scheduled time on the local N6USO repeater. As the net was winding down, Mayor Figueroa requested a moment at the microphone. And as you heard, she used it to thank the members of Hamwatch and the Amateur Radio community for their ongoing efforts to communities all across the United States. (KE6VRL) ================================================== ===================== RSGB NEWS G4NJH Monday 13 August Ofcom made it legal to use approved ultra wide band equipment without a licence. Ultra wide band technology allows very fast wireless data transfer over short distances. It works by using very large chunks of spectrum at once. Approved equipment will operate between 3.1GHz and 10.6GHz. During consultations the RSGB expressed concerns that there may be mutual interference with several amateur microwave bands. Supporters of the technology say that the ultra wide band transmissions are of such low spectral density that interference to other services is unlikely. The full text of the statement can be found on the Ofcom web site. The Irish Radio Transmitters Society says is getting close to tracing the 10m religious broadcasts reported recently on GB2RS. The location has been narrowed down to somewhere on the northern side of the city of Dublin. Further work is still required to locate the actual transmitter. Transmissions have been noted on 28.105MHz FM at 10am local time on weekdays. Additional transmissions occur at 9am and 11am on Sundays. OPERATIONAL NEWS - CONTEST COLUMN - D A T E L I N E AUGUST 26-27 ALARA CONTEST. This ALARA contest is run over 36 hours to give everyone 2 bites at the 80m band. For OMs only contacts with YLs count, while YLs can count ALL stations. Club stations operated by YLs are certainly encouraged. One highlight of the ALARA contest is that you may work the same station after a one hour interval on the same band. So it is worth while staying around a tad longer for that extra contact for both yourself and the other station. (Jamie Pye ZL2NN, Editor NZART's InfoLine) NOVEMBER 17/18 VK Spring VHF-UHF Field Day MEDIA WATCH ABC LOCAL RADIO in Kalgoolie have interviewed Kalgoorlie amateur radio operator Lewis Pannell as part of the ABC's science week. The news article provides some interesting background information on our hobby and shares amongst other things, that Lewis had communicated with NASA astronaut Andy Thomas during a space mission. It's great to see Amateur Radio being promoted in such a positive way and the show also reported on Mr Pannell's recent attendance at a VK6 Ham Fest WHICH SAW enthusiasts travelling from across that state to talk all things amateur radio. It is like a Trekkies for amateur radio enthusiasts. There were 350 people who travelled from Kalgoorlie, Kellerberrin and Perth to a ham fest According to Mr Pannell, radio equipment can range from $500 to thousands of dollars. But, speaking on ABC Mr Pannell says the highlight for him as a radio ham was speaking Astronaut Andy during a space mission. Another Kalgoorlie amateur radio operator, Des Martin, says the hobby of amateur radio is growing. "In the last couple of years in Australia the number of hams has increased by at least 1000 probably 1500 and with the new regulations, it is a lot easier to get started. You don't have to know Morse code anymore, which did put a few people off," he said. An official start will be given by the World Scout Bureau radio station in Geneva, Switzerland on October 19th at 21:00 h UTC with a transmission in the 20 and 80 meter bands and on EchoLink. WW SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS --- RESCUE RADIO EMERGENCY FREQUENCIES REGION ONE 21.360 - 18.160 - 14.300 - 7.060 - 3.760 MHz. WICEN group seeking ex submarine service radios - periscopes welcome too. http://tas.wicen.org.au/ The show went ahead, not quite as planned by the Southern Tasmanian Endurance Riders in the Wielangta forest south of Hobart, with WICEN providing safety checkpoints. First it was fallen trees resulting from the earlier fires that caused problems for the course setters. Then the rains washed out the tracks they did find. Endurance ride rules require 90% of the course to be accessible by vehicle in case horses become lame and have to be floated out. It might have been possible to literally float them out, but the requirement is for the wheeled variety of horse conveyance. So - last minute changes were necessary, resulting in deployment changes for the WICEN teams. Steve VK7FSRC came to the rescue with a text message to Bruce VK7MBD that he was being called on R5 from Wielangta - No mobile phone coverage in that neck of the woods but R5 was making it. That call meant that Bruce and Scott VK7FREK had to crawl out of bed earlier than planned and get to their new job location some two hours earlier on Saturday morning. The rest of the crew had arrived on Friday in pouring rain to set up base and survey the new checkpoint locations. Waders were appropriate footwear and four wheel drive almost essential - and that was just to drive across the flat paddocks at base camp. Every footstep caused a sideways fountain of muddy water - and a big clean up job later. Fortunately, Peter VK7TPE took his caravan which provided some dining and socialising shelter for the wet but still happy campers. The job went well with missing riders found, farriers called to replace lost shoes and floats to bring home the stragglers. 80MHz was used for voice, leaving 2 metres available for APRS tracking and a trial of the MEX packet tracking system. MEX was developed by WICEN South Australia for car rally tracking and scoring. The slower paced horse ride gave us a good opportunity to try it. All went well, but resource requirements might pose a problem for larger scale use and computer power supplies presented a 2m interference problem. A great social and enjoyable weekend made all the more rewarding given the climatic challenges. The other amphibians were VK7s Chris FCDW, Garry JGD, John ZZ, Roger ARN, Scott HSE and Stu NXX. Another demonstration of Amateur Radio in action providing a professional quality public service. But he still wants to hear from YOU, and it is these calls in particular that keep him going!! Thursday, 23rd August, 2007. Jeff is now 125 Kms south of Normanton. Tuesday and Wednesday were record breaking walk days. 37Kms on Tuesday and 37.5 Kms on Wednesday. Roger in Gympie VK4BNQ continues to provide a first class relay service for the group. Still on 7.045 MHz at 1730 EST. Temperature for the past two weeks has ranged from 1 to 32 degrees C. No walking on Friday 17th when camped 50Kms south of the Bourk & Wills Roadhouse as it rained most of the day and very cool. VK4SWE (Lyn) on Sweers Island has kindly offered a nights accommodation. Lyn has also offered Jeff the use of her station to conduct his nightly sked from the "real" gulf . Could be a busy night! Sweers Island lies off shore from Karumba. Brother Bill will try to reach Jeff after Normanton by car and walk a "little" of the way. Bill will take a 100 watt linear amplifier for Jeff, to assist with better communication on the way back. A tuned (approx. 10 metre), three piece aluminium tube vertical dipole will be set up on the wagon each night. It is an experiment and is Bill's antenna from Stockton. Should be an improvement away from the city noise! Jeff continues to thank WIA and Editor Graham with their support and the wonderful amateurs who have taken time to communicate with Jeff.
