/////////////////////////////////////////// Emergency Communications Demonstration at RMNP: Posted: 18 Jun 2013 05:06 PM PDT http://www.eham.net/articles/30308 Each June the Estes Valley Amateur Radio Club conducts an emergency communications project called Field Day. This year, area hams will be operating stations north of the Moraine Park Campground in Rocky Mountain National Park. This three station operation will be inside the Park for the first and only time. Such public service demonstration activities are rarely provided inside national parks. Rocky Mountain National Park is 93% within the National Wilderness Preservation System and correspondingly greatly limits public demonstration activities in these special areas. Park officials have been very helpful in enabling this special Field Day activity. Field Day is a nation-wide event that has been held each year since the 1930's and is the largest organized event for amateur radio operators in the United States and its territories. There will be more than 35,000 station operators nationwide conducting Field Day this weekend and the Estes Valley Amateur Radio Club will have 20 operators staffing three radio stations using both voice and international Morse Code as they make contacts with some of the several thousand other Field Day stations. /////////////////////////////////////////// Amateur Radio Enthusiasts to Host Convention on Weekend: Posted: 18 Jun 2013 05:05 PM PDT http://www.eham.net/articles/30307 GENEVA TOWNSHIP -- Aaron Miller is ready for any emergency. With a portable antenna and a generator, Miller is ready to go old-school with his HAM radio system in case of a large scale emergency. The Ashtabula County Amateur Radio Club will host a 24-hour convention on communications under emergency conditions Saturday and Sunday at the Geneva Township garage on North Avenue. The event will begin at 2 p.m. on Saturday and end at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Miller, president of the club, said he is working hard to pass down the knowledge, know how and passion for ham radio to the younger generation, knowing that someday they could be crucial to emergency communications and possibly save countless lives. "We are working hard to raise the number of contacts we have so we can get up and running under emergency situations," Miller said. "This is a generator and portable antennae set-up to test our skills in those emergency situations." Ham radio uses multiple frequency allocations to operate from just above the AM bands and microwave and satellite channels. This communication is available in all conditions, Miller said, when the internet, cable and even mainstream radio are off air. /////////////////////////////////////////// Ham Radio Fans to Hold Weekend Expo: Posted: 18 Jun 2013 05:05 PM PDT http://www.eham.net/articles/30306 TOPSHAM -- Mid-coast ham radio operators will join with thousands of others showing their emergency capabilities this weekend. The annual Field Day is the climax of the weeklong Amateur Radio Week sponsored by the ARRL, the national association for Amateur Radio. Using only emergency power supplies, ham operators will construct emergency stations in parks, shopping malls, schools and backyards around the country. Their slogan, "When All Else Fails, Ham Radio Works" is more than just words to the hams as they prove they can send messages in many forms without the use of phone systems, Internet or any other infrastructure that can be compromised in a crisis. More than 35,000 amateur radio operators across the country participated in last year's event /////////////////////////////////////////// So, You Want to Be a Ham?
