Become a Licensed Amateur Radio Operator at the 2015 Preparedness Summit

The 2015 Preparedness Summit will take place in Atlanta, Georgia on April
14-17, 2015. Additional information is at: http://preparednesssummit.org/



Incidents over the past year have once again demonstrated that developing a
robust and reliable system for communicating during a disaster continues to
be a challenging task. Landlines tend to be one of the first victims of
natural and man-made disasters, with cell phone networks generally close
behind. During times of disaster, many organizations are turning to amateur
radio (ham radio) to maintain communications and ensure continuity of
operations.

Become a Licensed Amateur Radio Operator

The 2015 Preparedness Summit will be offering the Federal Communication
Commission’s amateur radio examination. This examination is required to
become a ham radio operator. The examination costs $15 dollars and takes
approximately 45 minutes to complete. The test consists of 35 questions,
and you must get 26 questions correct to pass the examination.

NACCHO will be providing a series of resources to assist in your
preparations for the examination. Webinars, practice tests, and links to
relevant websites will be made available in the months leading up to the
Preparedness Summit. In addition, NACCHO is hosting an in-person ‘HAM-Cram’
review session the night before the examination at the Preparedness Summit

International Space Station - SSTV Transmissions - December 18 and 20

The Russian Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS)
team members plan to activate slow-scan television (SSTV) from the ISS on
December 18 and December 20. The expected SSTV mode will be PD180 on a
frequency of 145.800 MHz with 3-minute off periods between transmissions.
Several passes will be over North America.



Twelve different photos will be sent during the operational period.
Transmissions will begin at around 1420 UTC on December 18 and 1240 UTC on
December 20. The transmissions should terminate around 2130 UTC each day.

New Yaesu FT2DR HT with large LCD screen introduced.

Yaesu continues their track record of making new products no one in the ham
community wants.



Seriously, has anyone as Yaesu EVER actually asked a single ham what they
want in a new product? Still no word on a modern replacement for the
FT-817/FT-857 series.



Enjoy this his product that will be expensive, impractical. and no one will
buy, instead.

2015 Foundation for Amateur Radio (FAR) Scholarships

2015 Scholarship Information

The Foundation for Amateur Radio, Inc., will be administering a total of 67
scholarships worth an aggregate of $125,500 for the coming academic year.
The scholarships range in value from $500 to $5,000 each.

A complete list of the scholarships and their requirements may be accessed

2015 FAR Scholarships

All applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

Hold a valid US or foreign amateur radio license,

Be enrolled, or have been accepted for enrollment, at an accredited
university, college or technical school.

Applicants who attend a school located outside of the United States must
enclose a brochure describing the school.



Individual scholarships may have additional requirements.

Please note that the Quarter Century Wireless Association (QCWA) will award
36 scholarships, worth a total of $75,000, All that is required to qualify
for one of these awards is to obtain a recommendation from a QCWA member.
Instructions for obtaining the recommendation are in the form.

Yaesu to announce the new FT-2DR handheld radio

Yaesu will make an official announcement next week, but word got out early
that we’ll soon see a new handheld in the growing line of System Fusion
radios. The new Yaesu FT-2DR features a touchscreen display, a built-in
GPS, and can automatically or manually switch between analog and digital
(C4FM) modes based on traffic it detects on the channel. The FT-2DR is not
yet FCC certified, but we expect that to occur in time for their scheduled
arrival in “early 2015.” Check gigaparts.com for more information.

The Lee County ARES Team in Fort Myers, Florida has begun a community
relations program to encourage the acceptance of amateur radio operators in
HOA communities. The attached story appeared in the December, 2014
newsletter of the Del Tura Tower, the newsletter of a large and successful
North Fort Myers HOA.
