/////////////////////////////////////////// Amateur Radio Operators Celebrate 'Hamfest' in Plains Township: Posted: 03 Jul 2016 06:11 PM PDT http://www.eham.net/articles/37099 PLAINS TWP. -- In his spare time, Herb Krumich bounces signals off the moon. Krumich, a member of the Murgas Amateur Radio Club, said the hobby, like no other, allows him to build camaraderie with people from around the world. He said equipment at his home in Bear Creek bounces signals into the atmosphere, enabling him to communicate with about 100 amateur radio operators a day, many from places as far away as Russia and Europe. Krumich was one of about 300 ham radio (slang for amateur radio) enthusiasts gathered at "Hamfest" on Sunday, celebrating their craft, which they say is both a fun hobby and a necessary service in an emergency. In its 37th year, the festival, held at the Polish American Veterans Club, brings together ham radio operators from all over the east coast to buy, sell, trade and talk radio equipment. It is the club's major annual fundraiser. /////////////////////////////////////////// Parabolic Dish: Posted: 03 Jul 2016 06:11 PM PDT http://www.eham.net/articles/37098 Many Ham Radio operators in the United States participate in Field Day. This is an annual exercise where radio operators are encouraged to set up stations in conditions that might occur after a natural disaster. Usually, this means taking over some park or camp site, bringing generators, portable equipment, and making it all work for the weekend before you tear it back down. It isn't much of a Field Day without electricity. That's why most stations use a generator, solar cells, or even batteries. Today, though, you probably need an Internet-connected computer to do logging and other features. [HamRadioConcepts] has a video that shows how they grabbed Internet from a distance for their Field Day site. /////////////////////////////////////////// Ducth Amateurs: 'Revise 60 M WSPR QRG': Posted: 03 Jul 2016 06:13 PM PDT http://www.eham.net/articles/37097 A group of Dutch amateurs have taken the initiative to revise the 60 m WSPR frequency. Reason is the worldwide 15 kHz allocation for amateur radio on the 60 m band and the renewed IARU Region 1 bandplan. |
