The Casa Valley Dispatch reports that the American Radio Relay League's state convention was in its second and final day Saturday of presentations, tower climbing and the launch of a high-altitude balloon that will help with future radio communications. The event, known as Copafest, brings amateur ham radio operators from all over the state. Participants can see vendor exhibits with manufacturers of radio, electronics and other technology. /////////////////////////////////////////// NASA Scientists Study Solar Activity: Posted: 22 Oct 2016 05:07 PM PDT http://www.eham.net/articles/37821 Ten years ago, on Oct. 25, NASA launched twin satellites into orbit, giving them the first 360-degree view of the sun at one time. Called the 'STEREO' probes, these spacecraft have helped scientists better understand how the sun affects earth and the rest of the solar system. NASA is particularly interested in solar storms, known as coronal mass ejections, which occur as flares or eruptions on the surface of the sun. These storms can travel through space, and even affect life and technology here on earth. While the new probe will give scientists the closest view of the sun yet, the information gained will be combined with other missions to help better understand solar storms. |
