Bill Uhrich: Remembering when shortwave radio was a window on the world

Don't stop me because I know you've heard this one before.

But it's a story worth repeating.

The recent death of Fidel Castro brought back memories of learning about
the world through a shortwave radio when I was a kid.
For Christmas in 1962, my older brother Tim convinced me that we both
should ask for the radio so he would have a better chance of actually
getting one.
I don't know how my parents did it because a shortwave didn't seem like
something anyone could pick up at Hess Brothers or Boscov's, but on
Christmas morning under the tree was a Hallicrafters shortwave radio.
