/////////////////////////////////////////// Central Ohio Radio Operator Called to Help Deliver Messages in Puerto Rico: Posted: 30 Sep 2017 06:32 PM PDT http://www.eham.net/articles/40168 Puerto Rico is an island in chaos. Six days after Hurricane Maria tore through this US territory, the lack of food, water, and communication have left people scrambling. Lancaster native, Thomas Landon, a ham radio operator, is flying to Puerto Rico at the request of the Red Cross. "Our radio systems broadcast similar to your radio or TV station, they will be received to the mainland in Florida and the messages that we send will be turned into an email," he said. He says the emails will be delivered to those living in Red Cross shelters so they communicate with family. Landon was told to prepare for the worst. "The conditions in Puerto Rico right now are pretty dire. They don't have water or electricity and most of the stores don't have the capability to use credit cards because they don't have electricity," he said. He and 50 other Ham Radio operators--members of the American Radio Relay League-- were sent to the island. Landon says he was told his mission will last three weeks but could be longer. |
