AX Prefix on Australia's National Day:

Posted: 11 Jan 2018 04:06 PM PST
http://www.eham.net/articles/40681

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) automatically
allows all radio amateurs to substitute their normal VK callsign prefix
with the letters AX, every Australia Day. Our national day this year falls
on Friday 26th of January. This gives radio amateurs the chance to be part
of the commemoration the First Fleet's arrival in 1788 at Sydney Gove and
the establishment of a European settlement at Port Jackson, with the
raising of the British flag by Governor Arthur Phillip.

The IARU Watches WPT Developments:

Posted: 11 Jan 2018 04:06 PM PST
http://www.eham.net/articles/40680

Widespread interest continues in Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) technology,
reflecting the considerable concern about its potential to cause radio
frequency interference. Studies continue ahead of the World
Radiocommunications Conference 2019 with its Agenda item 9.1.6 - Wireless
Power Transmission (WPT) for electric vehicles. WPT applications are
expanding to mobile and portable devices, home appliances and office
equipment. The automotive industry looks to it for electric vehicle
applications in the near future. Power levels range from milliwatts to
hundreds of kilowatts and typical transmission ranges are up about 30
centimetres.

CQ White Paper Follow-Up - ARRL: 'We Have Met the Enemy ... and He Is Us':

Posted: 11 Jan 2018 11:15 AM PST
http://www.eham.net/articles/40679

In our previous white paper on secrecy and censure at the ARRL, we
asked "What is the ARRL So Afraid Of?" The answer is becoming disturbingly
clear. The League's top leadership appears to be afraid of at least some
members of its own board of directors, or to quote cartoonist Walt Kelly's
Pogo Possum, "We have met the enemy \& and he is us." Proposed changes to
the ARRL's Articles of Association and By-Laws, scheduled to be considered
by the board later this month, appear to focus largely on tightening
control over who may serve on the board of directors and impose Draconian
sanctions on board members and officers who stray from the "party line." We
find these proposals worrisome and feel they are inappropriate for a
membership organization. Even more disturbing is a statement by the
League's CEO that it's improper for the members to have seen these proposed
changes before the board has had an opportunity to discuss and vote on them.

Quantum Radio May Offer Twist on Communicating in Problematic Environments:

Posted: 11 Jan 2018 11:07 AM PST
http://www.eham.net/articles/40676

Researchers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)
have demonstrated that quantum physics might
enable communication and mapping in locations where GPS, cell phones,
and radio are not reliable or don't work at all, such as indoors, in
urban canyons, underwater, and underground. NIST announced
the technology advance on January 2. The technology may have marine,
military, and surveying applications. The NIST team is experimenting
with very-low-frequency (VLF) digitally modulated magnetic signals,
which propagate farther through buildings, water, and soil than
conventional electromagnetic signals at higher frequencies.

Thomas Fire Response Also Demonstrates Amateur Radio's Social Media Value:

Posted: 11 Jan 2018 11:05 AM PST
http://www.eham.net/articles/40674

Santa Barbara Amateur Radio Club (SBARC)
members kept a close watch on the Thomas Fire after it broke out in
early December. Using a variety of the club's analog and digital
Amateur Radio assets, radio operators were able to observe
fire-fighting efforts first hand and pass along immediate information,
often before it was reported by official sources or by local news
media. SBARC operates five communication sites in Santa Barbara County,
including sites on Diablo Peak on the mostly uninhabited Santa Cruz
Island, and on Santa Ynez Peak.

Radio Amateurs Track Major East Coast Winter Storm:

Posted: 11 Jan 2018 11:06 AM PST
http://www.eham.net/articles/40673

WX1BOX, the Amateur Radio Station at the
National Weather Service (NWS) office in Taunton, Massachusetts, joined
numerous SKYWARN nets across New England in
activating for an early-January nor'easter that brought significant
coastal flooding, damaging winds -- with hurricane-force wind gusts
downing trees and power lines -- and heavy snow accumulations to the
region. The eastern coast of New England experienced high snowfall
rates, whiteout conditions, and even "thunder snow." A dramatic drop in
barometric pressure generated a so-called "bomb cyclone."

In the article "Alabama Governor Kay Ivey Makes Ham Radio Debut with
State's Bicentennial Call Sign," which appeared in the January 4
edition of The ARRL Letter, we got the capital of Alabama incorrect. It
is Montgomery.
