D-Star comes to Omaha

I'm pleased to discover that a D-Star repeater has been set up on 2
meters here in Omaha, Nebraska: KD0CGR/R, 145.175(-). This effort is
being led and coordinated by the Omaha Digital Communications Group,
which holds the repeaters's club callsign:

This is apparently a coordinated assignment on a vacant frequency pair,
which is a fortunate circumstance from living here in the rural midwestern
U.S.

Gatewaying to Lincoln, 55 miles to the west, to the W0MAO
repeater/gateway, is being supported on a "semi-permanent" basis:

Looks like minimum equipment buy-in (for a handheld) would be about
$400-$450 for an Icom IC-91AD. That's a bit stiff, but is probably
in-line with what many on this newgroup paid for their first dual-band
HT (and that was in more expensive dollars at the time).

The Omaha Digital Communications Group plans to expand to 1.2 GHz
shortly.

Omaha analog repeater activity for many years now has been mostly in
support of severe weather nets and volunteer weather spotters under the
SKYWARN program. Time will tell how well this new technology can be
integrated into such nets, and other public service communications.
