Dual purpose soldering iron
 
I know this is only tangentially connected to amateur radio.
But a majority of us still do a bit of bench work now and
then.

I thought this was a perfect use of a soldering iron.

How about posting a photo of your workbench. From the small sliver of
the workbench visible in this photo, the workbench must look like a
rat's nest. It's supposed to.

That wasn't my workbench. However, this is what mine looked
like prior to a move from Los Angeles to Ranger TX.

According to Mayflower, the first load was 30,860 lbs. Not
including the forklift. There was another 1/3 of a 53' van
involved bringing the rest of it out here.

Another widely held misconception. While lead melts around
650 F, it doesn't boil (vaporize) until at least 1400 F.

What you're smelling is the rosin flux. And yes, that stuff
ain't healthy for you. (See UK Safety bulletin:)

What you do have to look out for, with regard to the lead, is
washing your hands before you eat after working with solder.
