Grote Reber listens to space. Grote Reber was an American original born in
Wheaton, Illinois, in 1911. When he graduated with a degree in electrical
engineering in 1933, Reber was already an amateur radio operator with an
interest in Karl Jansky’s pioneering use of a radio antenna to detect
radiation coming from the center of the Milky Way galaxy. Reber couldn’t
get a job with Jansky at Bell Labs, which was not hiring when Reber
graduated at the height of the Depression. Instead, he took a job with a
radio manufacturer and built his own radio telescope in his backyard in
Wheaton.

Ham radio operators spread the word about Battle of Vimy Ridge. Four Island
amateur radio operators spent hours at the start of January spreading the
word about the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge. Industry
Canada created a special call sign to mark the anniversary: VE100VIMY.

Property owner wants to remove ham radio towers from atop Islandia hotel.
There is controversy about a plan to take down ham radio towers from an
Islandia (NY) hotel thats set to become Long Islands first casino. On top
of the Island Marriott, the site where the controversial casino will be
built, sits an antenna and amateur radio repeater used in emergency
situations to help with communication. It has been there for nearly 30
years. The propertys new owner, Delaware North, wants to take down the
repeater site due to what it calls safety and security concerns. The news
is sparking outrage among amateur ham radio operators.
