Heehee! Now THAT'S funny. As an inland resident of
NC, I can expect to be asked to deploy for volunteer duty *somewhere*.
Having seen the effects of hurricanes
and actually being in one (Hugo), I take preparations seriously. Ham radio
and CAP communications will likely be put to the test. Even if cell towers
survive (unlikely during the brunt of a storm), the traffic load could be
awful.

Here on the texas gulf coast we've had several
tropical storms over the last couple of years....
while the storms weren't that destructive
(thank God), in each case there was a loss of power.
My cell phone was the only thing that wound up
working (I was suprised the towers didn't lose power).

My mistake was not getting a seperate 12v power source
for my transcievers, though, but by the next hurricane
season I should have the problem rectified.

Hmmm ... once the winds pick up to about 50 MPH, the cell phones will be a
jingling 911 to ask "is this the hurricane?".

By the time the winds are up to 60 MPH, a lot of cell phone users won't be
able to get through due to so many calls to 911 asking "is it going to get
worse?"

Once the winds have reached hurricane force, some towers will be down and
most calls won't get through. Many cell phone users will be trying to call
friends/relatives to let them know how they're doing. This is an
*excellent* time to call your girlfriend/boyfriend (for teenagers, of
course) to give them a minute by minute description of the junk flying past
your picture window. Don't laugh; when I was on Guam and a typhoon hit, one
idiot went out with a new motion picture camera (this was before video tape)
to take pictures of debris flying through the air! (yes, it's true)

Keep the batteries for the flashlights, unless, of course, you've got a
couple of HTs to use 'em in :)

Let the cell phone users tell me how reliable they are *after* the big blow
hits.

Too bad that is the only place you probably will see it. Hams already know
the capabilities and/or benefits of amateur radio.

Now, I see the "morning shows" are already showing coverage of the potential
storm, and gee, wouldn't ya think a story or interview on one of those shows
would have "some" impression." And of course if the average Joe (or
Josephine) ham was to call up CBS, NBC, ABC, etc. and try to get some time,
I am quite sure they wouldn't have much luck. BUT an organization
supposingly representing amateur radio, with alleged clout would have a
better chance of getting a story or interview in front of a much larger
public, such as these morning shows.
