FCC POWELL SETS STAGE FOR EXIT IN INTERVIEW: 'I HAVE A TIRED FAMILY,
TIRED CHILDREN AND A TIRED SPOUSE'
Sun Sep 21 2003 17:25:30 ET

**Exclusive Sneak Preview**

Michael K. Powell, the embattled chairman of the Federal
Communications Commission, appears to be setting the stage for an exit
with a candid interview pipelined for Monday runs of the NEW YORK
TIMES.

Newsroom sources tell DRUDGE that Powell has gone on-the-record with
NYT's Steve Labaton for a wide-ranging explanation of current affairs.

"I have a tired family, tired children and a tired spouse. Candidly, I
once said I would be in this job for three years and then leave,"
Powell explains. "That was three years ago."

"I've been called every name in the book by every opponent in the
book," he adds. "That's classic Washington. If you can't get past
jingoism, you attack the person. I wish the press would focus on more
than who's rebuked and who's rebuking and look at what the best
alternatives are for the public in terms of policy."

Labaton was said to be finalizing the text Sunday evening, for a
Business section lead, sources tell DRUDGE.

Wouldn't it be great if the next political appointee actually had some idea

He doesn't need to...That is why he has a STAFF!!!

Yeah he has "staff" but they're as clueless as he is. His staffer
D'Wanna or whatever her name is, the political tootsie who runs the
FCC outfit which sits on ham radio got up at a seminar and expressed
amazement at how people on the ground can talk to people in airplanes
in the sky with radios.

w3rv

Let me put it to you this way, the FCC could careless about amateur
radio....They aren't going to care about something they can't make any
money for the US Treasury...Wake up!

Well then the staff needs to know something about RF also.

What do you expect tho? When the only tech types are at whats left of the
monitoring stations. Everyone else seems to be lawyers.

Dan:

Forgive my cynicism, but since when has practical knowledge and
experience in a particular field of endeavor ever been a requirement
to become a political appointee? Mr. Powell became FCC Chairman
because he's a rare commodity in Washington politics: a black
Republican. And, I guess, being Colin Powell's son didn't hurt much,
either. Michael gave President Bush another way to pay off Secretary
of State Powell for not running against him in the Presidential race,
and add some "diversity" to his administration. A double-whammy.
I just wonder what kind of new nightmare we'll get in Michael's place?

Of course, in fairness to Chairman Powell, he does have a point about
the political back stabbing. However, I guess that's what we get when
we allow our government to be run mainly by career politicians who are
all beholden to special interests. I believe that the only way to correct
this situation is to never vote for an incumbent seeking his third or
subsequent term in a non-term limited office.

Sounds like Wayne Greene's "Never Reelect Anyone" campaign. I've got
no problem with that.

Points well taken, no arguement from me on them.

Maybe the next commissioner will be on the board of Alabama Power. The
corporation that has taken 5 years (so far) to clean up their trashy noisy
lines.

Can't wait till they try BPL.
