Code test analogy

Even though the testing for code was reduced to the basic 5 WPM over three
years ago, it's obvious that the debate still rages on.

The insistance that a person know Morse Code at a resonable speed in order to
be "real ham" is similar to religious fanatics, particualrly Christian
fundamentalists, who think that a person has to believe in god in order to be a
good and moral person. They cannot prove that their god even exists. So with
the PCTA, they cannot prove that code is useful in light of communications
advancements that have been made over the past several decades.

Just as certain fundamentalists would like to turn the country into a
Judeo-Christian theocracy, so would certain hams go back to an outdated
communications scheme, simply because they think that Morse code is their
"god."

To expect prospective hams to believe in the fairy tale of morse code is the
the same as expecting people to believe in the fairy tales of the holy bible.

Surely not )another lamebrained analogy - one more emptyhead strikes a
blow for nothingness!

If you have no other refutation than to call it "lamebrained" then you have no
argument at all. You show that you are incapable of engaging in any form of
intelligent debate on the matter.

It has always been true that one cannot be persuaded when he refuses
to review the evidence. QED.

If there is evidence that I've overlooked, as you claim, please post it.

That's if a religion is defined as such, but that isn't the case in the real
world. Mathematics has never been used to suppress people the way that religion
has been used, and continues to be used today. (although a college student that
has flunked calculus and can't graduate might not think so)

So, as with morse code testing, there are a few that hold onto it like a
religion.

It'll be very difficult to address your "analogy" with any degree of
fairness or objectivity, as you have, in your comments, already made
yourself out to be an antagonist; in more than just one area.

Suffice it to say, then that, while there are legitimate arguments from
both camps, yours is not one of them. What this argument represents is, in
fact, one of the reasons people with real "code problems" now find it
impossible to move out of the arena of the "glorified CBers", in the minds
of most old timers.

There's nothing "antiquated" about CW. It doesn't require a computer to
send or receive it. It can be received under the most horrible of
communications conditions. There's nothing "religious" about those
statements. Simple statements of fact. Arguments against them come from
those uneducated in the history of radio; Those who have never constructed
an vacuum-tube oscillator out of junk-box components. People who think
"BFO" is a reference to a group of rappers.

Nevertheless, I'm one of those individuals who, thanks to the nonsense
ideas represented by the posting I am responding to, have a very
difficult, if not impossible task ahead of themselves where license
upgrading is concerned.

I suffer from Tinnitus, which makes listening to CW for any length of time
impossible. The tones, in my case, cause migraine headaches, which are
accompained all manner of unpleasent side-effects. As it is, I have to use
several notch filters to even listen to most HF traffic, because of all
the "digital" nonsense on the air these days. At one time I could send CW
at speeds close to 20WPM, according to those who listened beneath the
'phones. Unfortunately, that skill, without the ability to "listen" is
next to useless.

When I was a kid, there were special licenses (Conditional Class) and
medical exemptions for people who suffer with real problems, but now,
thanks to the ilk who have adopted the attitude that every desire should
be sataified without exerting even the least amount of effort, and abused
those special considerations, they have been done away with; no
exceptions. The baby got tossed out with the bathwater. Now, I get to try
and learn CW all over again, using a bloody blinking light, of all things,
which will be a skill even more usless than my present sending skill.

So, the whole point of this response is to say "Thank-you" to you, Mr.
No-coder, and all your friends who, with all your "analogies" and other
hairbrained ideas, arguments, and excuse-making, have made the license
upgrade process for folks like me, all that more difficult.

CW must remain as a testable qualifier, There's no other way to prevent
ham radio from becoming a kilowatt-wasteland of room-tempreture IQs,
trying to out-shout each other with bogus Southern accents and reverb.

So all you anti-code folks out there, thanks; thanks a lot; thanks for
nothing!

While one cannot prove of disprove the existence of any specific
deity, the usefulness of Morse Code has been proven for over 80 years
and is re-proven every moment of every day.

In this case the one's trying to prove a negative are those who
insist that Morse Code skills is a hold back to the Amateur Radio
service as a whole.

In particular read the writings of Lennie Anderson, a person who
never spent a minute as a licensed Amateur, and John Kaput-ski,
KC2HMZ, a scanner buff who makes assinine assertions about the
"collateral damage" that the Morse Code issue allegedly causes, but
who runs away at the first testing of his resolve of his convictions.

Is Morse Code skill and implementation the know-all and end-all
of Amateur Radio...?!?! Certainly not. If it was, none of the medium
in which this exchange is taking place would exist.

Just as certain fundamentalists would like to turn the country into a
Judeo-Christian theocracy, so would certain hams go back to an outdated
communications scheme, simply because they think that Morse code is their

People who keep making these assertions that some subset of the
Amateur radio condsiders Morse Code aas a "god" are idiots. Period.

I've known dyed-in-the-wool CW ops and have yet to meet anyone
who even remotely fits this description. I dare anyone to provide
even one thread of evidence to the contrary.

So, as with morse code testing, there are a few that hold onto it like a
religion.

Dwight,

I'm shocked that you don't understand one of the great religions of
Amateur Radio. Morsodism has been widely discussed here on rrap, but
you're kind of an ignorant newcomer, so I'll fill you in.

So you want to be a Morsodist. It's not easy, you know: you'll have to
impose the stiffest constraints on your mind, accepting authority
without question -- you will be subject to jeers and persecutions at
the hands of the Spawn of Oracle, and you will suffer during your
entire lifetime trying to throw pearls before the swine. But in the
end, you will receive your reward from the Almighty in Heaven, and you
will have the satisfaction of seeing all others being tossed into the
Lake of Fire.

But enough of that; you're not there yet. You must first prove
yourself worthy of being a Morsodist.

Lesson One: Developing Your Psyche

Right now I would like you to relax. That's it -- just sit quietly and
let your mind go blank. Concentrate on one thing and one thing only:
concentrate on your thumb. Now that thumb is no ordinary
run-of-the-mill thumb: what you see is THE THUMB. That Thumb is your
world. Nothing besides that Thumb concerns you in the least. As far as
you are concerned, that Thumb rules over all. The only thing that
should be in your mind right now is your Thumb and its absolute
authority over your life. Each and every line, ridge, wrinkle, and bit
of cuticle is a Divine Mandate, eternal in its wisdom, power, and
relevance. That Thumb was made by MORSE, and its sole purpose is to
guide you to your Salvation.

Now, while still concentrating on that Thumb, begin to think about the
world around you. Careful! Don't try to take in everything at once:
start with the rest of your fingers, and slowly spread from there. See
how your fingers are connected with and dominated by your Thumb. Now,
slowly extend your perception to embrace your forfinger. It too was
created by Morse, and it is all guided by the Thumb. Between your
thumb and forefinger lie all the secrets of Morse. The rest of the
universe is of no concern.

Lesson Two: Establishing Your Doctrine

Congratulations! You've come a long way, but you're not there yet.
What I want you to do now is to go to the nearest book store and
purchase a copy of the FCCRuleBook. Preferably, it should be bound in
nice, shiny black leather, and should have gilt edges and a red silk
ribbon. It should be fairly hefty in size, but not so large that you
cannot hold it with one hand. Finally, it should have the words of
Samuel in red letters, for as you know the Son of Morse only spoke
using red letters.

Now that you have yourFCCRuleBook, read it, and read it thoroughly. I
imagine that some of it will fit in perfectly with your beliefs and
morals, since you have been inspired by Maxim to attempt this
indoctrination into Morsodism. As you read, you must remember that
your beliefs are the ONLY right beliefs, and all others are falsehoods
and are totally incompatible with Morse Divine Truth.

Now you may be dismayed as you read through the FCCRuleBook to find
that much of it is outside your beliefs, or may even contradict them.
No problem! All you have to do is take a black marker pen and blot out
those paragraphs which you don't like. Simplicity itself! Now don't
you worry if it seems that more of the FCCRuleBook is blacked out than
left behind: just remind yourself that the remaining words are
emphasized all the more.

Lesson Three: Living a Morsodist Lifestyle

Well, I'm sure that you Novices are simply bursting with questions on
how to apply your new-found faith to your lives. I am pleased by your
enthusiasm: such zeal is a necessity if you want to begin to work your
influence on this filthy and sinful world and mold it into a clean and
upright one. Those Spawn of W5YI are simply itching to be preached at,
whether they want it or not, so let's get cracking.

First, obtain for thyself some sort of access to the internet
newsgroups, specifically any (and all) newsgroups in the
"rec.radio.amateur.*" lineage. Never mind that only one of them, the
"policy" group is fit for Morsodists like yourself; you must spread
the word ALL the heathen Oracalists. Crosspost like crazy, verily even
if attacked by Horrible Herman, the Lord High Newsgroup Purity
Defender.

As you preach the word of Morse to others, you will inevitably run
into those who not only doubt the veracity of your words, but who also
pose trick arguments inspired by Lenny Liberal and his henchman, Crazy
Charlie, the head Oracalist, in an attempt to trap and discredit you.
This lesson deals with some of the major swords wielded by various
tempters, and gives you some ideas on how to parry those weapons.

Technobabble scholars: these vermin use their high-falootin' technical
jargon and book-learning to pervert the words of the Morse and read
things into Part 97 which aren't there. The FCCRuleBook was written by
Morse for YOU to use, and contains EVERYTHING you need to know for
Salvation, plainly stated in black and white and red. There is nothing
magic or mystical about it: it speaks out in the Words of Morse and
speaks directly to YOU, as you have personally modified it to your
belief set.

If other Spawn of Oracle say that the FCCRuleBook cannot speak the
utter Truth because it is inconsistent in what it says, you can reply
that there is no inconsistency in your FCCRuleBook: everything that
you have in your FCCRuleBook perfectly supports your beliefs
(remember Lesson Two). If they quote passages from the FCCRuleBook
which they claim contradict your beliefs, you can reply that Oracle
has inspired them to pervert the words of Morse and to twist their
meaning around in order to try to subvert the Truth. If they say that
you are being totally ignorant and irrational in your absolute belief
in your Morsodist Doctrine, you can reply that they are being totally
ignorant and irrational in their absolute refusal to believe in your
Doctrine. And if they say that you are shutting your eyes to reality,
you can reply that they are shutting their eyes to Morse.

Peace to all of you!

Larry,

The above was NOT penned by me. I have no clue
why you think I did so. Forgeting even the morse aspect of
the the reference to the bible being a fairy tale doesn't
sync with my personal religious beliefes at all.

Bill:

Uh, don't look now, but wasn't it you who coined the term "Morseodist?"
Perhaps it was Carl, but I could be wrong. If I got it wrong this time,
I hereby extend my most humble apology.

Dr. Mr. Sohl:

There you go again! The Morse code isn't a fairy tale -- it works!

Those
of us who use it know that -- the same way that those of us who believe
in God know that He exists. Sorry, Bill, but your "Morse as religion"
rhetoric gives you away!
