This weekend if someone is trying to steal your RUN-QRG (and if it looks
like he could succeed), hit the CW-R button to put him "on the other
side" of your center freq. Dit dit.

About two hours before the opening bell I bring my station out of
cold-iron status with a final check of antennas, software, etc.

In the final hour before the test I tune all the open bands and populate
my bandmap with all the rare-mult stations who are 'place-holding a
spot' for the opening bell. In the first 15 minutes or so of the
contest I work that bandmap before all the cluster-lizards find and spot
them.

Yep, Moundsville is about 70 miles up river from Parkersburg. I'm 14
miles from the river so the best route here from there is to take WV
Route 2 north to New Martinsville, hang a right on WV Route 7 to
Hundred, turn left onto U.S. Route 250 and follow it north until you see
towers, about 3.5 miles before you arrive in Cameron. Tell me when to
put the coffee on.

As to the fountain of youth inference, "Dan's" fount doesn't run
anymore except when he grips his code key. :-)

Started out like gang busters. Scouting the bands before the bell I came
across VY1JA handing out "placeholder" reports on 10M, so lurked there
and
put NT in the log as the 1st QSO. How much better can it be than that?

Then followed several good hours on 20 & 40, retreating down to 80M
about
midnight. At break time I had a nice fat log, including 79-mults
(missing
VE4).

Hit the bands again at 1400Z, and found Derrick VE4VV on 20 to open the
morning with my sweep in the bag, and started the day with some nice
(for
Sunday morning) runs on 20 & 15.

"HEY", sez I, "this may be my year!"

Alas it was not to be.

At around 1600Z things just collapsed, with only 15 showing much life.
Conditions fluctuated from bad to poor to fair to horrible the rest of
the
morning and all afternoon for me. At BIC=18-hours I decided I'd had more
fun than I could stand, so I sent in my log.

Only rrap'er I heard was N2EY early in the fray.

All I needed for SS-WAS was Hawaii. (sigh) Wyoming, normally the
hardest of the 48 in CONUS, was my 6th section! Heard a KL7 on *80*,
first time in the SS for me.

My first SS was 1968 - 81 QSOs.

The spots were definitely down; the bands above 40 were out of
commission sooner after sundown than I recall from previous years.
This is actually an advantage for us small-station ops, because it
pushes the action down to 80 and 40, where beams and other big
antennas are less numerous. Of course a low dipole isn't going to
match 2 elements at 80 feet on 40, but that's the game.

Now I just have to get in shape to hold on past 3 AM local...

I was out and about early in the contest on Saturday so I got a very
late start. Most of the early going was S&P though I decided to CQ on
80m in the middle of the night. I must've heard VY1JA about the same
time as Jim. He had a good signal for some minutes on 20m and it grew
weak rapidly.

I spent very little time on Sunday, having spent a goodly portion
watching the Steelers slap the snot out of the Eagles. Band conditions
on Sunday were dreadful. The watery, echo-laden, raspy signals
indicated aurora and those conditions extended down to even 80m. Never
caught a peep of N2EY, K0HB or W4NTI. Maybe we were all CQing at the
same times or all using S&O at the same time.

I was out there too but like many others, I only worked it for a few hours.
Once I nabbed Idaho to make sure I had another contact for my CW only WAS
(the card I already have was not correctly filled out), I didn't stay with
it much longer.
