Amatuer Radio in the News

Currently there are some 25 to 30 hams operating in various parts of
the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, reports VU2MUE, Sandeep Baruah. On
December 29th the Ministry of Communications & Information Technology
Department of Telecommunications WPC Wing, Amateur Cell issued
authorization to operate in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands to all
Indian Ham Radio stations. The authorization was granted on December
29th and is for "Radio Amateurs" to "assist the Civil Authorities in
handling the messages pertaining to the disaster at Andaman & Nicobar
Islands". Those VU stations participating in operations from VU4
"shall inform" the "Ministry as per Amateur Service Rules".

Ham Radio volunteers have been providing helping hands to the Andaman
and Nicobar administration and assisting different governmental and
non-governmental agencies by coordinating rescue and relief operations
locally. VU2CPV, Pravin Valera, who is a Police Official, has been
operating from the APWD Guesthouse. Another ham station has been
established at the Naval Airbase in Campbell Bay. VU3UTG, Parimal, is
also operating from the APWD Guesthouse. Yesterday VU2JOS, Jose
Jacob, was operating from a Relief Camp Ramakrishnapur, Little
Andaman. Later yesterday he moved and is now operating from a new
location at Hut Bay. VU2LIC, Ram is operating from Port Blair.
VU2LIC and VU2CPV were QRV on 7095. VU2LFA, is also QRV from Port
Blair.
