FCC issued wrong license
I just passed all exams (up through Extra) this past weekend, and my
paperwork was submitted to the FCC. After checking the FCC database, I see that I have been issued a Technician license and callsign. I'm surprised it was issued so quickly, but more surprised that a Tech license/call was issued instead of Amateur Extra. Should I call the FCC # on the CSCE form or wait a few days and see if it gets "fixed" in the database? |

The personal I spoke with at the FCC did mention a "modification" that she though had to be filed after the original Tech application was submitted. I'm not sure if this is the case, but I'm in process of contacting the VEC. |
"K4YZ" wrote in message ups.com... I'd call the VEC first since they are the ones who filed the paperwork. In the mean time, I assume they issued you a CSCE (Certificate of Successful Completion of Examination) for all applicable elements. You didn't mention the 5WPM code test but I assume when you said "all exams" you meant that too. If you didn't do the Morse part, Technician is all you will get for now unless you pass Element 1 within 365 days of the CSCE date, or unless the FCC rules on 05-235 to allow you to operate without it since you passed the writtens. As long as you have the CSCE showing successful completetion of ALL elements for Extra, and the FCC has issued you a callsign, you can legally operate with your Extra privileges using the Extra "identifier", for example "KZ4ZZZ / AE" in Morse or teleprinter, and "KZ4ZZZ Stroke Alpha Echo" on voice. Yes, I passed elements 1, 2, 3 and 4 same day. Was hoping for a shorter callsign since I'd like to do some QRP/CW work as my Morse skills progress beyond 5wpm. Perhaps a new call will be issued with the license "upgrade", or maybe I'll have to go the vanity call route. Remains to be seen. I knew I could use the AE privileges with a Tech license (it was a question on the exam) with a CSCE and proper ID... now I just need a transmitter.... heh. Congratulations! Many thanks :) |

I think that what may have happened is that since you're a totally new licensee, they may have issued the Tech as the first action, then input the Extra as an upgrade (which FCC calls a modification). In that case, the licenses could arrive days or even weeks apart. Welcome to ham radio! -- This raises a question about "new licenses" numbers. If in Design Guy's case, FCC first issued a Tech and then modified it to Extra, even though he passed all four elements at one go, the numbers may show his new license as Tech rather than Extra. I wonder how many others who went straight to General or Extra have been classified that way. 73 es GL de Jim, N2EY |

If not, all that they will issue is a Technician no matter how many writtens you've passed. If you did pass the code, you should contact the VE team that administered the test and quite possibly the VEC as someone did not enter it correctly. You should contact them immediately. The FCC has no way to correct the situation until the VEC submits the proper entry. Dee D. Flint, N8UZE |

Many thanks :) Once they have issued the call sign, they won't change it as part of correcting the database. You don't have to go the vanity route though. Once the database is correct for license class, you can get a new Extra class sequential callsign simply by submitting a request for a sequentially issued call. However, it won't be much shorter than what you have now as all that is available this way are the 2x2 calls beginning with A. If you want a short call, you'll have to search for ones no longer used and submit a vanity application. Dee D. Flint, N8UZE |

Normally they will issue a license at the highest level earned and issue the appropriate call sign. i.e. if you test all the way from nothing to Extra at one session, they issue an Extra class license from the get go.
