Watch the movie "No Highway in the Sky" and then read the history of the
Comet. The movie was released several years before the Comet came out.
Spooky.

As to the radio gear, CW in the '50s? I could see it as an emergency
backup but then it should have been stowed out of the way.

To get my real email address, replace wrongname with dadoheadman.
Then replace nospam with fastmail. Lastly, replace com with us.

Perhaps equipment designed for emergencies should be handy?

Of course, in bad conditions (low power, damaged aerials) CW will be
readable below the theoretical noise floor.

Just because I'm paranoid, that doesn't mean they're not out to get me...

Most of the equipment made for aircraft at the time ran on 400 Hz, and was
significantly lighter than it's earthbound counterparts.

Yep

when I was in HS we sometimes bought military surplus gear
and knew we could not use those 400hz xfmrs.

In the business I am in...
some of our power transformers run at approx 15khz

I can hold one in my hand...
the 60hz equivalent can weight several hundred pounds!
