Once things start rolling downhill it's hard to stop it. Look what
happened to CB. You want that on ham radio?

you apparently aren't familiar with what's been going on down on
75/80m and also on 20m. read the fcc actions in most any ham magazine
and you'll see that by and large the offenders are general class
licensees and above.

now, of course, not all, not even most, generals, advanced and extra
class ticket holders act cause problems. heck, not even most hams.
but i still don't see how doing ANY of the things you suggest will do
anything EXCEPT thin the ranks which, in my mind, will do nothing but
cause our service to become extinct.

And dumbing down the exams will make us irrelevant.

Newsflash. Your radio will still work just fine and you will still be
able to talk to other hams any way you like. That IS what ham radio is
for, after all. Other peoples exam scores will have no effect on your
ability to operate your equipment. Are you gonna tell another ham in
Berlin than you can't talk to him because Jack Sprat in Iowa got his
licence without code? Is your radio experience dependent on some
strangers [who you many never talk to] credentials? If so, then your
ham license was worthless the day you passed your test.

who's suggesting anything about dumbing down the written test?

But the written tests have been dumbed down as well. You don't need to
answer as many questions over-all for the General and Extra as you used
to.

Are you ever capable of telling the truth?
My 1957 ARRL License Manual contains 279
Extra questions in 25 pages. My 2000 ARRL
Extra License Manual contains 439 questions
and 350 pages just for the Extra exam.

When you sit down at a VE test session the number of questions you have to
answer over-all to be a Tech, General, or Extra class is less than it used to
be and that's not including the questions lost when CW was dumbed down.

First off... this is coming from General... who was Grandfathered...

I know many people who are not Extras and who have not passed the 20wpm
that respect those OM very much. I love to sit at field day and watch
in awe at a CW operator. Just because I can't do it doesn't mean I
don't respect it. And there are many other people like that. So please
dont lump all of us "meaningless generals" into one please.

"Grandfathered"? How?

Thanks!

But consider that you could probably do it, too.

Nobody is born knowing Morse Code. Those who know it, learned it and
kept on learning it. They all started from zero. Sure, some people have
more innate skill/talent than others, but that's just one factor. Most
people learn to understand speech at more than 100 wpm - is 20 wpm code
more complex than that?

And there are many other people like that. So please

No license class is meaningless.

Techs that had passed elements 1A and 3 were grandfathered to general
after restructuring. I used to be a VE.

Ahhhh...

Slowcode, is the only thing you do on the net is gripe about the absence of
CW testing?
