Scanners in Europe

Has anyone taken a scanner to Europe and if so other than the language
barrier was it worthwhile? My wife and I are planning a vacation trip in
the next few months and can't find anyone who will answer my question.
We will be in Germany, Italy and Croatia.

Thanks for any reply.

Ron,
I'll reply, I have not taken a scanner to Europe but I have friends who
scan over there.

The thing you need to ask is will they let you in country with a
scanner???? I take my shortwave radio every where but have not taken a
scanner yet.

Hope it helps a little.

Germany is rather restrictive. First, the scanner needs to be
approved. It needs to have one of the following markings: CE, BZT or
BMPT. Second, so called 'BOS Kommunikation' (authorities, police,
ambulances, fire brigade) may only be received by people with a 'BOS
Genehmigung' (BOS licence).

If a scanner is found with non-licensed frequencies programmed, it is
considered a violation of the law.

I`m not shure if that is correct. I think if the scanner doesn`t have any
freq band that is legal (e.g. fm radio) it is a violation. If you look at
all the places one can buy a scanner in Germany they all would be ilegal
since they all can receive stuff that isn`t meant for public listening.
Afaik it is legal to buy and own a scanner in Germany, but it is ilegal to
listen to everbody out there.

That's not in contradiction with what I wrote.
