what portable scanner is recommended for Chicago

I would like to get a portable scanner for use in Chicago. I live near US
Cellular field so I am not too sure about interferrence I might receive. I
am particularly interested in monitoring CPD, ISP and CFD. I am also
interested in monitoring Midway airport tower (assuming the distance isn't
too far for a portable: about 5 miles).

Since CFD is testing digital and CPD has digital channels assigned is it
worth spending the money to go digital now or should I wait until they cut
over? Who knows when that will be.

I am retired and money is limited, but I would rather buy what I need now
rather than buy something that will be useless in a year or two.

I would appreciate your opinions.

Thanks,
Joe

Hi Joe,
Sorry no one has answered so I'll try to help.

My personal thoughts, I like BearCats (Uniden)

They make a very nice little scanner that fits on your belt and looks just
like a police radio and they work great.

Be sure to get some software so you can load the local freq's. You should be
able to load about 300 freq.'s and that will cover most everything you want
to listen to.

I buy most of my stuff from:

http://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/index2.html

http://www.grove-ent.com/

Also, be sure to get the latest freq. updates from some of the "Online"
clubs that have freq list.

Hope this helps, I keep waiting for someone in you area to answer.

Let me hear from you

Thanks for the info Burr, it is appreicated. I too like the size of the
Unidens. Since the BCD396XT is due out next month (unknown cost), I am not
sure if I should wait for that or even better, pick up a 396T for less! It
looks like ESK support is what has been added to the XT (GRE's PSR-500/RS
Pro 106 already supports this).

Since Chicago area Emergency Services are just now getting ready to switch
to digital, I am not sure if the lack of ESK is a show stopper, but I
imagine in the near future it will be something I want.

If anyone has any specific info on the Chicago areas move to digital, I
would appreciate hearing what you believe is necessary.

By the way Burr, I have been through the Bulacan area several times during
my 6 years of being stationed in Subic.

Maraming Salamat Po.

Joe,
Why don't you call Universal and Grove and talk with them. They have
some smart people there and they want your repeat business so they will tell
you the truth.

It's not what you know, it's what you are able to find out on any
subject!!!
