Former NPD sergeant saves drowning baby

(July 17, 2009) A former Nantucket Police sergeant saved the life of a
baby that nearly drowned in a pool at a Cliff Road home Friday
afternoon.

Former sergeant David Aguiar, now a reserve officer with the
department, was driving on Cliff Road when he heard a call come over
his police scanner about a 14-month old child that was pulled out of a
private pool and was unresponsive, according to lieutenant detective
Jerry Adams.

Aguiar drove to the address, located the mother and her child at the
end of their driveway and began to administer CPR. He was able to
revive the child, and waited with its mother until NPD Sgt. Brendan
Coakley arrived at the scene shortly afterward to administer oxygen.
The baby was then transported by EMTs to Nantucket Cottage Hospital
and flown to an off-island medical facility as a precaution.

Adams said the baby is expected to make a full recovery with no
adverse effects from the ordeal thanks to Aguiar's quick response.
