buy a name brand, buy the house brand scanner.

There is no such thing when it comes to communication equipment. There are manufacturers which make similiar pieces of equipment with different features for users with specific needs. We're not talking about the leading brand of furniture polish here! There is no "house brand"! However Uniden is one of several leading manufacturers fyi!
